I'd recommend spending a little more and you get a new engine with a warranty from the dealer. I had a blown 3.6 and I almost bought an engine from these guys but the dealer came through with an offer only a couple of K more than the rebuilt engine and I got everything on the engine is brand new, water pump, hoses, basically everything apart from the A/c compressor is new.

looking for a spare?

seriously - stop by Chris's - you know the answer already...cutting corners on a rebuild will cost a lot in the end - Chris has recent data points regarding "saving" on a rebuild....

Ed - Thank goodness I do not need this - just saw it and thought it good to Share for others who might need the option. Seems to me if I were in a bind with a blown engine the Renewed Porsche @ $18,000 or this at $9,000 or maybe $12,000 for a Flat 6 rebuild gives folks some options based on their wallet. Of course you would need to see in writing the items replaced in this unit and the "Garruntee". Their pricing Included shipping both ways (return Core) so it is very aggressive. If it where me - Yes indeed I would consult Chris and add in the LNE install... But if I loved the car and had $20,000.... a Flat 6 3.8 would easily be my choice.

my son asked my yesterday what I would have done had the 996 motor died....I told him I would have cried

yea, rock and a hard place if the budget cant handle it and you are not going to keep it long enought to recoupe the repair costs in miles driven....

I would look for an un-repaired used motor and do the "list" and go with it... might be able to find one for $5k and add another couple for the list....

3.6 Engine from the dealer is $15k, so 3.4 would be cheaper.

ha... in your thinking an early Boxster would be the cheapest....guess again, prices are not in relationship to liters of displacement

I'm just talking about what I paid for the engine, and that came with 2 year warranty, installed, and all new parts apart from the A/C compressor. You can't argue with that compared to a second hand engine which is 9K to buy, $800 or so to ship, 1-2K for local indy to install and no warranty. Add another 1-2 for the IMS bearing fix and you're above dealer prices for an old engine.

If you read the ad from LAD this is a complete rebuild with all updated parts - includes shipping two way and a 12 month Guarantee. If I had to buy now - the difference of $4 to $5 K would cause me to look into this. From other posts I have seen Dealers are now asking $18 K for a Porsche reman Engine. That is a $10 K difference. Hope I never need to consider either option. Add to that this outfit would not charge the WA State tax saving another $1500 on the Dealer engine. Gee - I think I just talked myself into buying one as a spare - ultimate peace of mind and an Inflation Hedge fund. Maybe get a large plate Glass table top and convince the Wife it is a decorator piece ???

as Marc says and as I said earlier - cutting corners on a rebuild IMO would be worse than a used motor un-touched.... those "upgraded parts" are nothing short of the new part that replaced the old part (like the new RMS revsion 68B - fancy talk, nothing more....

sorry i wont bash them any more, but they have a bad rep.

I agree Jack $18k plus tax, plus install....hence my comment on crying....

3.4 engines have the thinest cylinders & most prone to irregular cylinder wear. Ask how this was checked/addressed as a part of the rebuild process.

FYI May 12 debuts a reality show featuring Porsche dismantlers on National Geographic channel.

FWIW they don't rebuild motors. They have them rebuilt or buy one on an exchange basis from a reputable rebuilder, the same guy who built mine. If anyone's really interested PM me....
