since this is a media related topic I have a story:

tonight on the way home I heard a Porsche commercial on the radio, strange I know so I listened...

they said Porsche is not all about 0-60 times and is infact more about driving the kids to school. Then the said it was a great way to drive a 400 mile trip, then they brought up the 0-60 thing like 3 more times... I kept thinking WTF?? no wonder corvettes always want to race us between lights... Our own mother keeps the 0-60 thing alive....

in the end I thought what phycologist came up this that commercial

They want to sell cars. One barrier to a new-to-marque buyer is practicality. Saw the ad on tv. Thought it was a smart move to help eliminate a barrier to prospective owners. Even if they seem to be posers.....people who will buy the car just because it looks nice and seems sort of sporty -- still help assure good parts availability through larger total sales and a healthy used market.

I can see both sides of it.

Ironically, I have never thought about Porsche as a straight-line 0-60 machine. True, turbo 911's and Carrera GT's are fast cars ... but for what they costs new (or used for a CGT), they're not exactly in a league of their own.

And the rest of us driving naturally-aspirated Porsches? We have quick cars, no doubt, but they're not going to set any records. A new V6 Mustang has roughly the same 0-60 time as a stock naturally aspirated 996. Apples and oranges, I know, but if we're just talking about straight-line acceleration, the Porsche is pretty bad value of the money; my 12 year old 996 cost me more than a new base model V6 Mustang, and I'm fairly certain the cost of upkeep will also be higher on my car.

But it isn't just about acceleration. We love the handling of our cars, the crisp chassis, the sass of the rear engine weight bias that makes a loop around the track a test of one's grit, etc., etc. And for many of us, the staid German engineering is part of the allure. This is a car I can drive in all weather, and it is engineered with enough common sense and decency that I can drive it across the country comfortably.

If selling people on the idea that a Porsche can be a practical kid-hauler, then so be it. Maybe it'll sell a few more cars to people who otherwise think they need a 4 door Lexus to cart the kids around. Maybe it'll shake them from the doldrums of "practical" sedans or (worse yet) SUV's, and maybe a few of these new owners will become participants in the local Porsche community.

So they're right, in a way. It isn't just about 0-60 times. If that's all that Porsche had to offer, they would be out of business tomorrow.

Cheers,
-- Mike
