I'm still under the CPO, so that's why I initially called the dealer - I thought it might be pro-rated or replaced free, but they said no. This probably won't happen again - I don't plan on not driving like the 2.5 months that I was home bound due to a medical issue with my shifting foot. No lights to tap into in the garage for a battery tender. You can see the garage type in my avatar's background.

The radio code is electronically stored in the car (ECU?) after 2002. No need to manually reprogram if stock unit. I have changed my battery 2 times. First time the only thing I needed to reprogram was my clock. Second time I left my battery tender on and did not have to program anything.

I don't get the issue.
You went to a business, got a quote, were not pleased with the quote, and then went elsewhere.
Sure, $475 is brutally overpriced, but you can't rape the willing.

There is no issue, we are simply discussing how appalling WE find the business practice of the dealers... right or wrong we are simply expressing our opinions.

With regards to dealers gouging their customers, Some of the dealers have learned their lesson (for how long is anyones guess)
I recently broke my wheel lock key. I went to my local dealer last Friday just to purchase a key. Well the service manager came out to my car with 36 potential keys. She picked the wrong one and brought it into the parts manager. He said "they don't make this key anymore". and then he showed my the documents from PCNA stating what key replaced which. All 996 part number wheel lock keys are on there way out.
He said I can sell you a new lock set. As I braced myself,
he said, "it costs $70." That didn't seem to bad.
Immedidately, a tech comes over (the same tech that replaced my RMS under CPO) and grabbed the wheel locks, a torque wrench and cordless lug nut gun.
He realized the wheel lock key selected by the service manager was the wrong one so we began the process of finding the correct key.
Once he found the correct key he replaced all of the old lock lugs with the new set I just purchased. He was one of the senior techs there so I took the opportunity to pick his brain with regards to the IMS bearings and other known issues with the 996.
I went home and checked the price that Suncoast charges for a new wheel lock kit. $65! My local deal did right by me.

While PCNA has proven to be totally arrogant it is the dealer lobby that has managed to get state laws passed that "protects" (St, d)ealers from factory oversight.

Has anyone had any issues with the type and quality of electrons generated by non-Porsche dealer batteries. I'm concerned that these electrons may be inferior in quality and could cause an electrical malfunction or worse.

I believe Porsche (along with BMW and a handful of others) use new cores and casings for their batteries, and they do cost more, though of course nowhere near $400 or even $300.
That said, many dealers -including our excellent dealer here in Cary, Leith Porsche- will inform you of lower cost options. I personally have run lightweight over the shelf batteries in my 996s. The secondary battery for a late BMW e38 chassis 7 series is a small and light battery. It is a bit lower capacity so it may not suit everyone.

Sears Diehard FTW. Mine is six or seven years old, I do everything "wrong" like leaving the car sit for two weeks at a time and not using any kind of battery tenders or anything, and it starts right up every time.

That is interesting that your dealer wants $475 to replace a battery.
I replaced the battery on the Orient Express last year with a new Porsche Battery for $185 cash and carry (plus core). Took me about 30 minutes to replace it.
I also finally invested in a trickle charger given that I don't drive the car as much as I used too. Trickle charger cost $85.

I paid around $30 for two light bulbs last year. I asked if that price came with lube and the parts manager just snickered while the other guy standing there quickly walked away.
I bought more bulbs for my BMW this spring and it looked like the same bulb and paid under $8 for both.
