Are we 996 owners the actual Porsche enthusiast?

I had a guy in a 993 turn his nose up at me the other day and tell me my 996 wasn't a real Porsche. LOL!
I don't consider myself an enthusiast in the sense that I know everything there is to know about my car and Porsches. However, I have wanted a 911 since I saw my first whale tail when I was 12, and I'm learning everything I can about it.
I was going to get a new 997 S cab, but stumbled across this Turbo and couldn't resist. The 997 with PDK is smoother, quiter, easier to drive, and has more creature comforts and almost as fast. My 996 is rough, loud, has a few rattles (not bad ones), and will give you whiplash if you get sloppy with the clutch. It feels much faster.
I love it! I may have to breakdown and get some of those little sissy driving shoes.

you can always say,..."yea sucks neither of us have a real 911" - that always gets their goat since the "real 911" was last produced in 89'
fire away
and LOL at sissy driving shoes..... thats FUNNY!!

This has been discussed before. There are so many 996's on the road because the economy has deemed it possible for lots of people to buy them now and they were mass produced in the economy boom of the 90's-00's. Used 996 or new Accord?
They think the 993, 914, 928, 924, etc are too old, but can't afford a 997. You're waving at a lot of folks that should be driving Camry's & Mustang's, but thought it'd be cool to buy a 996 just because they're cool.
If it's got Porsche written on it, I wave.

I should be driving a Camry..in 20 years i'll realize it was financially stupid to buy a 10 year old car. But i'm sure glad right now that i'm not.

I was driving the other day and a Boxster was going the other way, I waved and he waved back. I felt like I was finally part of the P-Car Family, that was a good feeling.
Resist! You have to resist! Those shoes are not you. Plus I want to see you with your cowboy boots on when you get out of your car at the HPD DE.

These cars are not about finances.... they are about emotion.
They are expensive to own and devalue at a good rate.. who cares.
Life is too damn short to drive a Camry

i was driving camry when i was 20 years old. but i quickly figured out that's a waste of time, and i got a 996, never looked back.
it will be financially stupid to buy a new car, for the same $25k, after 5 year, the altima will only worth $15 in a good day, 996 will be worth much more, even if you factor in main. cost.

My best friend from college and I both bought $24k cars when we graduated in May. I bought a 996, and he bought a 2011 Nissan Altima. It had pretty much every cool option available. But he sure as hell doesnt smile like a butcher's dog everytime he has a long walk to his car. I park far away from everyone so my doors dont get dinged..but i also do it so i can enjoy the beauty of the lines as i walk closer and closer to my car. Every day i say 'Holy **** look at my car...like wow is that mine?' obviously I dont say that out loud to avoid being pretentious but you get the picture.

924 owners are the true Porsche enthusiasts.
The 996 fell in a sweet spot for me ... not new enough to be the latest yuppie-mobile for those who just want to be seen, and not old enough to have the collector cache of a 993 or earlier 911. And, it's not cheap enough for throngs of high school kids to have ruined the nice clean ones ...
Cheers,

You need to go barefoot if you really want to be hard-core! I've done it a few times and it sure gives you a different feel than wearing shoes.

Driving around South Florida I get to see an awful lot of other Porsche's on the road (sure mostly Panamera's but that is another story ) 996s, 997s, GT3s, Turbos and even older air cooled.
However, when I have actually had opportunity to talk to some of these drivers while at the dealer, indy shop, parking lots, or even on the road. I have come to the conclusion that "many" are clueless about their car it's lineage, history, and even less how to actually drive the damn thing. Hell, I can't even get a wave back or a headlights flash while passing another one on South Florida roads. WTF? I would further say most of these folks are not even car enthusiasts let alone Porsche enthusiasts. So that said seems like us guys that have bought our 996 second hand, have lusted for one for years and finally fulfilled our dreams are the "real" enthusiasts. The rest? Well I think we have an awful lot of "posers" in our ranks.
What do you guys think?

A few years ago when I owned my 996 this forum was bemoaning the fact that no one waved. Since the model was new, many of the owners bought the car because it was expensive and cool...not for the heritage.
Now, those same 996 owners have moved on to the 997's and the 997 forums complain about the lack of waves, no appreciation for the history, etc. The 996's have dropped in price enough to be affordable to more people. Many are enthusiasts; however, a large number just buy for the look or prestige.
As a side note, when I drove my 997 back from Houston, I did not get any waves from 996 or Boxster owners! And, yes, i wave at everyone since I own both a 997 and a "lowly" 914!

"Mobil 1 Blink. I switched to the synthetic last year; had to replace the blinker end seal because it had a slow leak. 8W13 weight is good for all seasons ..."
I'd pay money to be a kid at the counter at Pep Boys when this dude comes in bustling with his newfound knowledge ...

On the wave......I'll wave at anybody from some kid riding shotgun in a pick up truck to the Monseigneur in the Crown Vic.
