Lightbulb Advice for purchasing 2002-2005 996 3.6L Cabriolet Carrera

Seaking enlightenment as a prospective Carrera buyer please:

I've heard things about Rear Main Seal & Intermediate shaft bearing to look out for with the 911 Carreras (not sure this is applicable to the 02-05's?) I'm lookint to purchase a Cabriolet with 70K miles or less if I can find one for 22k or less if possible.

I'm open to the 98-2001 models but would like to buy a 3.6 instead of a 3.4.

I've had a late model 350z and a Z4 3.0si, thus I'm doing my best to educate myself on preparing to make a purchase that will treat me right with a new used daily driver with a manual transmission of course.

From what I've read you can get a lot of super car thrill for your money now with these slightly older Carerra's.

Any guidance any members can provide as I begin to seek out potential purchases would be most helpful

Thanks in advance for any tips or wisdom you are willing to impart.

PS- I live in the Fort Myers Florida area.

Best- Adam

so I see you are going to "look out for" the RMS and IMS issues but to be honest there is no way to know when or if those will fail prior to failing... (well an RMS might weep a bit which isnt really an indicartion of an RMS failure and could actually be an IMS seal weep, case bolts weeping or other)

so as for those, dont get all worked up...and a PPI can only tell you if something is currently weeping - even a weep can go on for a long time without concern IMO - if the IMS is something you have "heard about" I suggest you read what the signs are, and the potential issues and see if there is a cure that fits your concerns (like an IMSR)

$22k seems low for an MKII so most likely you are 02'

what reasons have you thinking a 3.4 is less desirable? (personally I like the MKI's so I am curious)

one thing to consider is driving a few cars - you will pick up a lot just being around them and start to notice differances and that will help fomulate a decision - welcome to the board and OH YEA... post any potential cars, we'll pick them apart for you - you will be surprised what these guuys see just from ppics that you might not

last word...if you are quick here is the right car, but it will sell fast !!

School yourself on option codes and packages. A 'base' Carrera, even with a $70k original sticker price, will not have such seemingly basic things like memory seats, bi-xenon headlights, or a decent stereo. This is how Porsche makes big money on new cars. And yet, expensive options such as full leather, Porsche Stability Management, and Bose stereo don't add that much to the value of a used Porsche. Therefore, the more options the better!

This site has a fairly decent description of the major options for 2002.

There are also a huge number of 'exclusive' options like special wood, carbon fiber or aluminum trim and other such stuff. Essentially no two Carreras are identical.

Ed, he wants a manual transmission, not a slush box.
