I find sealant used on water pumps inside cylinder heads all the time.. It has lead to cracks, just like broken pump impellers.

I use the single layer metal gasket and install it dry, with the proper surface prep I have never had one leak. I avoid sealant in this area at all costs.

Ed, Just to add to the thoughts on my favorite part of the 996 - the Cooling System... Replaced my WP @ 74,000 miles as PM when "Replacing" the missing T-Stat. WP was in good shape with a slight bit of movement in the bearing. Blades where all good. My Third Water Pump in four months - First the 968 then the A6 then the 996 I should be good for another 10 years !

I have been good this week.... only been down to the shop once, or twice

No Temp problems Ed. The 996 is just fine... but it has spent more time on the battery tender then on the road. with the weather and tire issues with the 968 - it has been the Porsche of choice for all but the Bad weather duties the Quattro is assigned to. Next week is 996 week as the wife & I alternate carpool duties.
