well, I've had the 997.1 C2S for a few weeks now and while I haven't driven it like it were stolen just yet, here are a few things for comparison sake
997S hp - well, it's a 3.8L and is a bit quicker, of course it gets the nod
997S shifter - I have no reason to believe it isn't stock but it's WAY better/shorter
997S suspension - yeah it's a bit lower and is a bit tighter, gets a slight edge (it's a scraper up front, no f-cars or lambos for SF streets)
997S seats - sport seats, man they cradle you, way better
997S color - love mexico blue, though guards red on the 996 looks great-push
997S interior - it is much better, but there's still a fair bit of plasticy crap
997S steering wheel - alcantara (a $1K option....seriously???) love it!
996 PSE - gets the nod over 997 PSE, not sure why, I'm a little bummed
996 headlights (shape) over 997!! I said it and stand by it
997S headlights (Xenon)
996 interior door latch over 997 - by a mile (I know, nit-picking)
997S gearing - seems far taller and this thing goes like a scalded dog
997S brakes (think the S actually gets Turbo brakes)
'02 996 C2 guards red, 41K miles for SOLD (SF) $26K

996 MKII HID lights are bi-xenon too - MKI are not.

sorry - it isn't listed yet. though it should be.
my indy has a detail guy that I had work his magic. indy has an interested party (while charging me $200/month storage)....if it doesn't hit soon, it gets photogrpahed tomorrow and put up on craigslist (at minimum) for what I hope is a local sale
additionally, probably cars.com

Installing 200 cell cat X pipe would solve your exhaust sound issue. PSE switch would be able to keep the sound at bay when you want it quiet. I have heard Ferd's setup and its perfect.

I always thought that the 996 headlights deviated too much from the classic 911design, but in a way it makes me feel better owning a 996 knowing that there are P-car fans out there that think they look better than the original design.

A lot of character is built into the headlights of a car. I can identify a car in the dark from the headlights. In the case of the 997/Beetle headlights I don't know if I'm looking at a Porsche or a VW and I think that's a real shame.
