I have a 2003 (so it has a decent cupholder), but I just installed the Bird Armrest. Really well-made and engineered (over-engineered?) item, I recommend it for all three of its stated purposes (i) armrest; (ii) additional storage space; and (iii) cupholder. Google "bird automotive" to find the details, I think a few of the forum sponsors carry it as well.

I just don't trust the factory Cupholder in the 02 and up.
Sits Over my double din radio/nav, climate....etc. One spill would be ugly.

I have a BRAND NEW 986.552.183.00 cupholder (driver's side) that was made for the Boxster but also fits the 996 with the little holes in the air vent. I bought the wrong one. Let me know, I will give you a great price on it.

I have been contemplating on cup holders on my 99. Has anyone done it on theirs? Any pics of before/after?

I have the factory model cupholder in mine. Very small. I switched over to drinking espresso (same bang, smaller footprint) which comes in the smaller cups that fit nicely in the holder.

I just installed the cupholders below the vents, they are the same holders that Audi uses plus the bottom of the holder is closed to catch any moisture that drips off the cup..

That's the one I use on the drivers side. Only problem with it is when you try to turn off the ignition with something in the holder, it gets in the way a little.

I purchased 2 of the Ultimate Cup Holders and they're great. Well placed, out of the way but accesible. Great company to do business with. Thumbs Up!!!
