CDR-210 upgrade to CDR-220 or cd-23. Worthwhile?
I have a '99 996 with the original CDR-210 head unit, 6 disk cd changer and M480 amp. I am considering switching out to a CDR-220 to get the AUX input for an iPod connection. Would this be a plug and play upgrade and would the 220 give any performance improvement? If not would a CR-23 switch make more sense, assuming it is even possible? I know the stock systems aren't great but I prefer the look of them in the dash over the more modern units.
Appreciate any guidance. Thanks.

Seriously?
The stock unit, amp and speakers suck. If you're going to go through the trouble of popping components out then pop them all out and get some decent sounds.
Of course, brace for the impact of those that want you to listen to the motor. If you are not a philistine then swap out everything.
Otherwise, join the chumps that say press the accelerator and listen to the engine. And forget about a drink holder.

As rwiii pointed out, to get a major sound improvement you should also replace the speakers, but I suspect you're like me and just looking for the convenience of an iPod/iPhone connector.

PS: and for cupholders in a 996, nothing beats "Ultimate Cupholder"

Sorry, I would say I didn't mean to offend but I know I'm rough around the edges. I am always in need of tunes and a sip of adult beverage from my home made drink holder regardless of how un-PC I am.

Unless you can get a 220 for a song, why not just buy a tastefully done new unit, with built-in iPod inputs? Stereo head units have come a long way sound-wise in 12 years!
