Default Another variation on the fister mod

I took my mufflers into a local engineering firm yesterday and asked them to do a fister type mod to my mufflers after showing them a few pics of the various ways other people have applied the mod. I left them with the mufflers and a section of stainless U tube and they called me back this morning to pick up the job. As you can see from the attached pic they did a nice welding job and used a slightly different angle to some others but overall very tidy and plenty of clearance for the tail pipe clamp.

It's been a good Porsche day - I ordered new strut top mounts and bearings for my front struts (since we cooked them yesterday) this was around around lunchtime yesterday and the courier was knocking on my door at 0830 this morning with the parts. Got to be happy with that service!

I cant see.. is that a 3.4 can or 3.6?

if 3.4 that is about the best you can do, if on a 3.6 I have not seen that done and my guess it will growl a tiny bit more then the "standard" way - should sound nice, you will love it for sure....what did they charge for the operation

post some sound clips!

Mines a 3.4. I've attached another pic that shows the attachment point relative to the lower pipe/bellows.

The car is still on stands while I do the suspension so can't do sound clips yet - actually I am not a big believer in the value of sound clips to be honest as I don't think I ever heard a recording of my car that actually sounded like my car.

hmmm, most of the 3.4 cans I have seen have a huge seem over the end cap. Yours looks more like the 3.6 can, any record of them being replaced with later model 3.4's? I forget if my 3.4's had a seem or not though, funny how the brain remembers somethings and forgets others

(like these)

There's no record that I have that they have been replaced and judging by the condition of the hardware as described on my web pages the mufflers have been in place for a long time. The car was only at 68K when purchased so I think it's a low likelihood that the mufflers have been replaced.

Mine stock mufflers has the seam too! haha. I just got the fabspeed mufflers installed and it drones from 2800rpm - 3400rpm ... -.- But overall sounds really good. I think i m gonna wrap the mufflers to absorb drone ...

Ed,

I always thought that only the 3.6L mufflers had the accordion pipe, but a couple of years ago someone posted their 3.4L mufflers with the accordion pipe. Now the only difference I have been able to discern is that the 3.4L mufflers have a dome where the added pipe would connect on real PSE mufflers. On my 3.6L mufflers, that connection was concave.

So in short I think the mufflers are like belly buttons. Either you have an "innie" (depressed or concave) or an "outie" (sticks out). So the 3.4L mufflers have an "outie" and the 3.6L mufflers have an "innie." I apologize for using such technical terms!

Yeah, I had the same thought, Tim. Which is why I immediately thought when I saw the OP's mufflers that they're 3.6 cans. I've seen a number of 3.4 mufflers with the accordion, but never with the "outie", and the fact that it has BOTH the accordion and the outie, well, looks like those cans have definitely been replaced at some point. Hey, it's a good thing!
