I have an '02 996 Targa and the interior lights do not light when the door opens. I have the interior light switch in the center postiton as well as driver/passenger reading lights in the center position. The lights work with the key in the ignition in either position 1 or when the car is running in position 2. The door lights also come on when the door is opened with the key in P1 or P2. The overhead lights also work when the switches are in the right position with the key in P1 or P2. The lights do not work in any position with the key removed from the ignition.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you,
John

If not a fuze then maybe a switch. Have you tried opening the passenger door to see if the lights don't work from that either. Then move on to fuze and wiring.
I'm also not certain of any possible common grounds the lights depend on.
Does the overhead lights work at all or are you only noticing the regualr lights that come on when opening the door?

Read your post again and like you already figure.....where's that power routed from when the ignition is off.
Try having the lights on when car is running then switch the car off. If the headlights go all the way out with no parking lights left on like usual then it could be where that relay is that controls when the power is on and off. Understand that?
Could also be the light switch which is an easy fix they say.

In my 2003 the left position of the rockers is off.
To the center position is "on" with open doors/remote activation until I close the doors and put the key in ignition then quick timed to off.
On when I turn the ign off, stay on until I exit the car (or at least open & close the door) Then timed on for an additional 15-20 sec.
Right is on all of the time.
I also just found out that if I reach into the car, put the key in the ign and turn it on to see gas level, the lights will stay on for a long time. The lights stayed on long enough to take DD for gas and return, ~1/2 hr. When I opened and closed the door the lights timed off ~15 sec.

I had the exact same problem as the OP in a 2001 996. It turns out that I had to have the alarm module reset (or at least that's what the dealer told me they did) - all works now with keys out.
The other theory was that it was in shipment (dealership mode). Regardless, try to get someone with a PST2 or PIWIS to reset your alarm module and see if that fixes things.

Bought a second key at the local dealership today and while I was there I mentioned my problem and asked if it could be in "dealership mode". The service manager and the tech doubted it and figured it was the ignition switch but would try the "delivery" flash.
And BINGO...everything works just as intended!
Thanks for all of the help guys. Rennlist rocks...
