Yes, it will fit. I have the 997 regular (base) shifter in my 2003 C2. The difference between the base and GT3 are the billet aluminum end caps on the GT3; the base uses plastic.

http://www.suncoastparts.com/product..._Code=996Trans The model years for all 996 are the same.

The 997 base was a nice upgrade from the stock 996. It provides a slightly shorter throw and better feel/engagement. I'm still wondering if there is a big difference in feel between the 997base and the GT3 other than price.

+1 on better gear shift feel on the 997-shifter (I got a used '08 version), compared to my old '00 OEM C2 one. It's a direct fit, very nice... Cheers.

So are all the shifter consoles a direct bolt in across all years and regardless if it's a C2 or C4 then? It's sounding like it.

Default Gt3 shifter

After reading your post I just installed a gt3 shifter part number 997.424.010.91 together with a sport exhaust and it has completely transformed the driving experience. Precise nice throw (and not at all uncomfortable) vs mushy long throw.
Now it is really the car I was expecting from Porsche and I’m enjoying the day to day so much more.
Thanks for the tips.

The range of shifters I found:

- Porsche factory shifter short throw (shortest 35% shorter than 996, also $500!)
- B&M shifter (shortest, 35% shorter than 996, $285 +/-)
- 997/GT3 (shorter than 996 by 15%, plus billet aluminum bushings vs. the base model plastic, $300)
- 997 base model (shorter than 996 by 15%, $200 +/-)
- 996 base model (what I have)

I use my car as a daily driver with sporty weekend drives through the twistie's and hills; I wanted a quicker/shorter throw but I didn't want micro race specs to make my in-town driving a pain.

The GT3/997 is a full console (not just a lever and ball joint thingy like the B&M); fits just fine in the 996.

The feel of the shifter is really much more "precise" and the shorter throw is just what I was after. Quicker but not to quick/tight. Drops into gear really nice. Also, being I live in Denver, where we have a winter, I didn't want to have a picky/fussy shifter when cold!

I'm not sure if it's perceived or real; or if the shifter is just new ... but the overall feel is so much more enjoyable. Shifting into gears felt a little soft in my hand; now if feels solid, stable and precise. And the shorter throw allows me to not have to move my whole arm to shift but gives enough leverage to allow city type moves like three point turns and navigating parking lots with ease. I also like that there are no critical parts made of plastic/resin.

Cost was about $300 for the part plus an hour to install. I had my P dealer do the install for me; also bought the part from him as his cost was a few bucks less than I've seen online.

Happy with the upgrade and recommend if anyone is in the market for a shifter change.

Cheers,
Howard in Denver

Where is the best place to source part 997.424.010.91? Pricing online looks to be $425 and up, not seeing the $300 price point referenced in this thread.

Inflation maybe? The post suggesting $300 is 7 years old...

I am trying to do a 997 Shift Console Upgrade. What parts do I need to get for my 996 to do this change? I checked out someone's car who did the upgrade, and I prefer the shift throws to my stock 996 shifter.

Correct. I just did this in my car. New cable ends are included, as is the neutral lock bridge to adjust cable length. No other parts are needed. Installation takes about 20-30 minutes, especially if you have taken your console out before and know how to do it. I like the feel of the new shifter; the throws are noticeably shorter, but only just. Definitely not like a short shift kit, so if you're looking for very quick throws this is not it. I've driven a 997 with the short shift kit and hated it; very hard to tell what gear you're in, or even if you're in a gear at all. This standard 997 shifter has a much more positive feel and just the right amount of effort, for my taste at least.

I was in two minds about the standard 997 and the 997 SSK, went standard because the 997 SSK comes with a warning that its hard to shift when cold.

Standard 997 doesn't have that issue, although i'm tempted by the Numeric racing shifter based on the excellent feedback on it.
