Saturday 1hr project has been more than an hour and i still can't find it... Where is the charcoal canister located on a 1999 996? I looked everywhere in the front trunk compartment, but cannot locate it. I have a used one to replace the existing one. Also, do i have to vacuum lines or just plug-in?
Thank you, A
I replaced the canister based on a recent computer reading that this was necessary.
Sorry, no pic. Process as follows:
- Loosen lugs on front right
- jack up front right
- remove lugs/wheel
- remove ~3 nuts and ~4 lock pins that hold wheel well plastic in place (note for those less experienced: you pull OUT the center pin of the lock pins and THEN pull out the sheath. use small crow bar or back of hammer to pull out the center lock pin. Once out, you'll see how these two separate plastic pieces work together to form lock pin)
- charcoal canister is on the left of wheel well, directly under the gas filler tube. Only one nut allows you to slip it out of place.
- to remove the 3 tubes attached, press the grey (or red) tabs on BOTH sides at the attachment point and remove. Also must remove one electrical connection by lifting metal clip.
- in order for new canister to go back into place more easily, i put a little grease on the two round cutouts where the rubber boots of the canister rest. this helped alot.
- reattach all items and reassemble all.
My charcoal goes just under the grill. All I have to do is lift the grill to add more charcoal. I do this each time prior to grilling steaks or other foods. I use Kingsford on a Weber One Touch. I don't have to do anything to the car.
