The noise is constant and follows the engine speed, and sound more like a rattle than the tick you typical get with a lifter. I have not wanted to run the engine to long, I did rev it a bit but then shut it off.

Well I think you can sit home and guess, throw parts at it and hope you hit it, or have a specialist look at it.
Did it freeze while sitting?
You coould remove the belt and run it, see if its motor or some accessorie like the AC or water punp - check the water pump for end play (they rattle when the bearing fails) try depressing the clutch and issolating the tranny out of it - or rtelease the clutch to remove the throwout bearing from making contact.
All just thoughts?
I think you are wise in not running it but also need to get a diagnosis and a specialist would be worth going (towing) too at this point
