Default K/N Cold Air

Attached is the K/N Cold Air intake I installed in my 02, 996. The istallation is pretty simple. The difficult part is geeting it lined up so the hood will close due to the water drain. I also installed aftermarket headers that I purchased off of e-bay. I only paid $150.00 for the headers...stainless steel, great quality. Great sound

Nice job, did you have any trouble with header bolts?
The coolant expantion tank looks like its turning yellow, keep a lookout for leaks.

I changed to JVT headers, hoping to get a little more HP. I had no trouble with these header bolts, unlike the trouble I had with my 1999, 996. When I first purchased this car, I removed the header bolts, dipped them in Phillips Milk of Magnesia and torqued them in place. Why MoM, that's what we used as anti seize for bolts used in GE aircraft engines. It works great, dries to a white power, no more frozen bolts. You must use reg. MoM not the mint!

Just curious, where does the cold air come from? An honest question not intended to be snide.

Your intro story is funny as hell and unique. MoM - LOL!!! Don't listen to these forum etiquette *****. Also - don't get baited into any pointless discussions about "where does the cold air come from" - duh. You did the mod for your own reasons - enjoy. Welcome to the board. Very nice work.

It's not pointless, it's a fricken question. From the appearance the filter is open to the engine bay. Where does the cold air come from?

Duh? Nice.....

I asked the question and added a note stating that it wasn't a baiting question. Because I'm not seeing how it works.

Or is it a forbidden topic?

Duh.

The top isn't sealed off from the hot air. So while it does get cold air from the hose sucking air from outside the engine, it gets plenty of hot engine air. Your question is perfectly valid!

It's a critical flaw with the K&N unit. Someone posted a heat shield mod for this CAI on 6speedonline that seems to work well. This might be something the OP might consider doing. I've been meaning to do it on mine.

I would think you could take the original airbox and modify it to accept the K&N air filter. That way you wouldn't have the alumi-mod.

That's an interesting idea. I don't have the airbox with me here, but from my memory, I don't think it was nearly big enough to fit the conical filter... I'll have to check.

Youre right, hi my name is Billy and I live in the Burlington, NC area and a member of the Triad chapter of the Carolinas PCA. I do all of my maintenance work on my car such as brakes, plugs, and oil changes. I will not debate the cold air filter system. Maybe a better term is full flow or less restrictive as opposed to the stock air box. I do know that my car runs better and Sounds better than a stock 996. The Mom is real, and a great anti seize!

Welcome Billy! ...and FEEI (for everyone else's information...lol) I've used Mom for years. My grandfather was the chief maintenance officer of a fighter squadron, retired the chief safety officer of a major airline... and we've been using it on our motorcycles, race cars, and aircraft for decades.

Cheers!

I think I may have a super slow leak in my expansion tank...and it is very yellow. Is that the possible source of the leak - hopefully not somewhere else in the cooling system?

(I know it is not getting into the headers - oil looks good. Exhaust looks good.)

How do you know that? Have you dyno'ed the car before and after these modifications?

I'd also like to get a look at these $150 headers
