If you have an '03+ and the gas pedal is anything but smooth, read on.
My gas pedal was sticky (i.e., when you back off the gas a ljust a tiny bit, the pedal doesn't spring back and it just stays there by friction, which makes feathering the gas pedal a huge pain). I removed it for lubrication and found most of the friction is actually from the ball joint on the gas pedal that accepts the metal rod (see black arrow in the 1st photo)....and I think it's by design. It turns out all '03+ have a 3/8" c-clip that "squeezes" the ball joint and tighten it up (see photo below).
I accidentally knocked off the c-clip during re-assembly. With the c-clip gone, the pedal is extremely smooth! I feel my right foot is now tied directly to the rear wheel/engine.
More googling of e-gas pedal patents reveal that artificial friction is used to mimic the feel of the traditional mecahnical gas pedal. There's also mentioning of the need to add hystersis so the car won't stumble on very bumpy pavement. I've driven the car for over a yr now without any side effects wathsoever...just smiles on my face and much easier feathering of the gas and the clutch.

Ahsai, great info....I too have a "sticky" pedal on my '03 996, I didn't realize this until I started to install sport pedals (which are going to looks sweet by the way)! I also noticed there is some side-to-side play in my pedal (I see others have corrected this via a small screw or mounting tape). Did you have this issue as well? In regard to the removal of the c-clip.., still no issues with removing the clip after 2 years? My concern is that the ball joint could come loose, any one experience this? Does the pre-'03 have the same design (just no clip) anyway? Thanks!

I removed the pedal in my '03 last night, interesting as there was NO c-clip! Not sure if someone removed it already before I bought it, or if it just didn't come with it? The only part holding the metal ball post was a round plastic housing attached to the pedal (with three grooves that flex)...Either way I wanted to clean the pedal and lube. Thanks again for all the tips!
