Disclaimer: I enjoy the experience of driving (even mundane, city traffic driving) much more than the 'normal' person. For me, a car is not just a vehicle to get from point A to B; half the fun is getting there even if I am just going to run an errand. For most people I imagine that is not the case - which is a great way to be. There are times I wish I was that way too, but I'm not.
This is really it - there are times I wish I was that way too, but I am not

I haven't properly introduced myself here yet but can't resist this thread. A month ago bought my wife an 04 C2 as a daily driver for her birthday. She smiles everyday she gets in it.
Worth every penny so far!

D-Man,
If you can get a Porsche AND make your wife happy at the same time, it's a no-brainer. In your situation, the cost/benefit ratio = HOME RUN.
Buying a used car = ~$35k
The fact that it's a Porsche, makes her smile, AND you remembered her birthday = PRICELESS
Congratulations, and enjoy it.

[QUOTE=P7;7947408]Again.... (sigh) there are many other quailities to Porsche cars other then watching the needle hit 7 grand all the time that make our cars a joy to drive on the street.
'Showing off' as you put it - isn't even remotely on my list. You make it sound like it's black and white issue; go fast or go home? It isn't.
If you start (what we all take as a serious thread) that questions people's motives on why they buy a 996 and don't track it and get flack about it... and THEN you mention, "Don't take what I said literally..." Well expect sarcastic replies to result. Just saying.

Only here would we have one thread on if it's worth owning a 996 with no track use and somebody else asking if it'd be OK to drive the car on the street in the next thread...

Questions that cant be answered...I dont track mine. I have no warranty.. When it breaks I's gunna out my wallet. I drive it a few times a week. I put 3000$ in it when I bought it in Jan '10. Put 16000 Miles on it this summer and have only put oil n gas in it. I drive it like I stole it. Have no fear.. If you have the money to buy it you have the money to fix it? No?

The sound of the engine is simply amazing, and brings a smile to my face ever time i fire it up..
If you have the money to buy the car, and you dont have the money to fix and maintain properly, then you should not have bought it..

I got my 996 in June. I've never been to a DE, but I might try one next year. I work from home so I'm not using it to commute. Every evening, I go to a deserted stretch of parkway near me to get my growl on. The road is curvy, has stone bridges and runs along the water. Top down, I merge onto the parkway slowly - about 40 mph then hit the gas and I'm doing 85 in the blink of an eye. The sound of an old fat guy laughing out loud nearly drowns out the growl of the engine.

It's what you value. Plus they all go on the track, some just visit sometimes.
I will always remember the mild mannered salesman when I walked in to see 996 FS, saying "you have to drive it," I'd chose to see her *** up on the lift first! Until you are prepared for that, it may be best stay away. Maybe can think of it like this too, don't date a hot latin chick unless you fully understand what may happen.

I could DITTO most of what was said, but I want to go back to the practical - you mentioned "KIDS"? If you cannot afford to do good things for the kids and own a $25000 996 and the $2000 to $5000 potential maintenance annually --- then I suggest you purchase a good used 944 and have your cake (yes with less HP) and enjoy it too. Spend $8000 to $10000 on a nice late model 944 or maybe an S2 and you will have fun on your daily drive and spend less on Maint & insurance - and when the 18 year old wants to borrow the car for prom night you will not worry nearly as much. When college is paid for it will be the 996 or 997 time of your life, and make the 944 your Track car... ;-)

When I bought my 996 back in july I didn't think I was going to track it, after a week of owning it, I was a little bored. Some how I thought owning a porsche would change my life, no, there was something missing.
I went on a sunday drive and came back discouraged because I couldn't safely push the car to the limit on the street. I signed up for an auto_x the next weekend and fell in love with the car, I found what I was missing.
I signed up for a trackday, and really fell in love, and knew I would keep the car for as long as I could and keep doing little mods until one day it's a full on cupcar.
It's a love/hate relationship with driving the car on the street though. On my way to work I have to apex every turn, I hate it because if a cop ever sees the way I drive when I drive that car, I'm going to get a reckless driving ticket, I love it because when I get out the car I'm smiling ear to ear, and feel like I've had 7 cups of coffee.
Although I'm much more emotionally stable when I drive the tacoma to work/errands. Ideally I would like to turn in it to a full trackcar and get an enclosed trailer.
When I go to the track if the car breaks it breaks, if I slam into a wall because someone's coolant leaked all over the track, then I'll pick up a second job to get another 911.
As with any addictions, you can't rationalize it, you just make it work!

Actually Duane, yours looks much better and bigger. My list that you're referring to are history/sold. My '79 SC was a fabulous Porsche...and you still have your SC.
