Default Time for rear brake pads - question

looked up rear pad on pelican and got 5(!) results:

Genuine Porsche $152.25
Mintex $53.25
Pagid $66.00
Textar $73.25
akemobo ?

The Textars have a little "OEM-supplier" icon and are 50% the price of oem, is the price difference all the box they come in or are they really different?

so, OEM? Textar @ 50% off or pagid/mintex?

I did 2 track events this yr and will probably do 4-5 next yr. Not looking to be more aggressive then stock - I still have a lot to learn and I am on street tires.

Thanks

There is the possibility that while the pads have the OEM-supplier sticker the pads are not the same pads sold to Porsche. The pad material blend can be less Porsche specific and more general purpose and cheaper cause of it or the overall quality of the pads is just lower cause they are second tier pads.

If you got acceptable life out of the OEM pads why not just replace the worn OEM pads with OEM pads? Sure they're more expensive but you don't have to be a guinea pig using your car to try to determine which pads are good and which pads are not so good. Porsche has already done this.

Not like you're replacing pads every other week. My cars' pads last 40K or 50K miles and rotors sometimes double that (though the Turbo I think will need pads and rotors at around 50K miles) so saving a few bucks I can't see is worth the risk of running possibly substandard pads.

Oh, I see you want more agressive pads for track use. Not sure what this means. A quicker bite maybe upon initial application of the brakes? Stock pads bite quick enough for me -- no tracking though -- so no doubt you'll want to read the responses from those that have track experience and brake pad experience on the track.

Of course you want to keep the brake fluid fresh. Nothing makes brakes a bit soft than old fluid that gets hot from track use.

Sincerely,

Macster.

Jurid and Textar have been OEM pad suppliers for Porsche at least since 1970.

I have Textar on my car and they are pretty good. Low noise and reasonable dust.

I just found out I have textars on my car and they were great in the mountains. I'm buying Porsche sport pads from Sunset. I was quoted $125.98 fronts and 113.98 rears. Buy the GT3 brake ducts too! $6.26 each!?!?! I need to reconfim part numbers but I think that's a good quote for al of it. No tax and super cheap shipping.

$102 for Genuine Porsche at Suncoast. Not sure why people continue to use Pelican when Suncoast is almost always the cheapest.

Side note: reiterating that I'm not looking to be more aggressive then stock.

Dell - thanks for the tip. I got my tranny mount from pelican, shipping was free and got it in 3 days from the left coast. sun-coast is cheaper in general but not always but their website stinks and Im too lazy to call in

Picking up the phone will ALWAYS save you $$$ when you call Suncoast. They have always taken good care of me.

I would add that Sunset is as easy and cheap. Does Suncoast charge tax?

As for too lazy to pick up the phone. I just find the last email Sunset sent and reply with a new parts list.

Mintex, Textar & Pagid are all part of the same company...TMD friction...

While Porsche has used Mintex & Textar as OEM suppliers for years... The fact stands that they require their supplier base to only supply them with their product.... Thus, Non-OEM sourced pads, WILL NOT be of the same compound configuration. That is not to say what you buy of either line will be inadequate or inferior. If you really want to go aftermarket try the Pagid Sport Blues... These would be the OEM pads for Aston Martin, Bugatti, Lamborghini, McLaren. The part number is T5104 front / T5105 rear for a 996 up to 05' turbo would be T5110 front / T5104 rear.

PM me and I can give you some more details and lend some advice.

Chris

Got it: Not more agressive braking. Sorry. My mistake. I misread that part of your post.

Then I'd definitely just stick with the stock pads.

Sincerely,

Macster.
