A/C compressor off = a better driving 996?
I was driving along, wondering why the engine looses so many revs when I step on the clutch. Then I wondered why I had to step on the gas to match the revs to shift up to 2nd like no other car I have driven, making it more work to shift smoothly.
Then I turned the climate control off. That changed everything. The engine revs stayed higher longer, making shifting a joy.
Is this normal behavior for our cars? I hope never need the a/c again!

I have an electrical switch installed in the back wall of the center glove box that I can use to open the circuit to the A/C compressor clutch. The A/C does NOT run unless I truly need it for cooling.

if your car is egas.... the pedal feel vs revs should be the same weather the ac is on or not. The ecu knows the ac load, therefore giving it more gas... so the revs should be the same with the ac/on or off.

I feel the 996 does a reasonable job with the power the compressor robs from our engines. But like you I try to keep it off as much as I can. Unfortunately in this weather that means it is always on!

Is there that much difference between e-gas and cable throttle?
iirc 2000 went e-gas?
From the OP description it sounds like the car is holding revs between shifts like a Toyota or something.
Or maybe 944's also hold the revs like that, i.e. as part of emissions control between shifts to lessen the unburned fuel.
You have to give gas to upshift to 2nd???
Either something's wrong with your car -- or you shift extremely slowly?

I've driven/tracked both 99 cable throttle as well as the MK2 and the GT3, I'd say the latter two have better/smoother -low load- response, as well as a more constant idle.
That said, even on track I run A/C, have done so (and even won several time trials doing so) for many years. Practically every car since the 80s disengages the A/C compressor under high load/high rpm, so as long as there's enough coolant capacity, why not use A/C if it'll make you more comfortable? It's impact to performance is trivial, if that. The MK1 cars w/out a third radiator don't have enough cooling capacity to run A/C for longer sessions on warm days though.
