996 ABS - PSM Strange Problem
Hi Everyone
Quite a first post from me but here goes!
The car is a 1999 - 996C4 Tiptronic and had developed an intermittent fault back some 6 months ago when I first purchased the car for a friend of mine who has a car dealership albeit not specialising in Porsche.
The problem is two-fold - Firstly the ABS pump kicks in on it own accord when turning into a right hand corner with some variation on the road surface (IE manhole cover - pothole etc). The front left hand side of the car dips down suggesting that the LH front caliper is being actuated by the ABS. Secondly after approx 10 mins of driving the ABS & PSM light come on.
Here is some of the things already tried by a few that have looked at this
1 - Steering wheel angle sensor replaced as Durametrics Diagnotics was stating that there was an error. Sensor replaced and calibrated by official Porsche dealership. Problem went away for approx 6 weeks.
2 - Back on the Durametrics and Front left speed sensor came us as a fault. Item replaced and problem cured for 3 days.
3 - Porsche Tech advised my tech looking after my car that the wiring loom from the ECU to the Speed sensors can be a problem - this was replaced and fault still exists.
I have been out in the car today to try and dig deeper on this and finding a nice large open space managed to get the car to deploy the ABS while traveling in a circle in a clockwise direction. Interestingly enough I turned the PSM off and could not get the fault to happen?
One other snippet of information that may be useful is when the ABS & PSM light come on after the 10 mins, it is only the LH wheels that have the ABS turned off - the right hand wheel still have full ABS functionality.
Yet another snippet of info - The ABS / PSM fault is throwing up the steering Angle sensor fault again - If you clear the code and then set off again and get the car do deploy the ABS on its own and stop to check for fault codes - none are found. (10 mins latter and ABS/ PSM error returns and steering angle sensor fault on Durametrics)
Any thoughts anybody!
Many thanks
Paul

PSM and ABS faults can be triggered by tires which are the wrong size. Has this been checked?

Paul,
I had a similar issue with my car in February. The tech not only replaced the angle sensor but also worked on the cable loom with a repair kit. The tech charged three hours for the total project. I also noticed a "cable routing" charge.
