Question for TireRack guy:
Why is it that TireRack has gone all politically correct and will not even quote a tires size larger than what OEM says is approved? I have bought tires from you guys since forever and I still remember the +1 and +2 campaigns what happened?
My last car had I listened to you I would have been stuck with 205's all the way around when 245's fit just dandy. I just went back and forth with tires for the 996 and each rep I spoke to and or emailed REFUSED to deviate from the OEM is god routine.
Rant over... and NO I did not listen to any of those guys I listen to the guys on here on sizing

Damon from TireRack is great. I purchased my Sumi's from him and I will go back for ALL of my tire purchases.
Quick question........
How many miles are you getting out of your Sumi's? I have about 10k miles on my F&R. Should I run the tires down to the wear bars?
For those of you with the Sumi's, what PSI are you running in your tires?

Agreed, on the online portion. But to stick to it even on the phone? I mean come on a simple question as "in your experience with other customers" will size X fit my car deserves more than toting the politically correct answer. They are supposed to be the tire experts and have data from years in business. That is why you call them isn't it?
All I am saying is they didn't used too be that way... I can call Porsche NA if i wanted the politically correct answer. Any way, ordering the libelous politically incorrect 235/40/18's & 295/30/18's Hankook V12's tomorrow

I ran the Sumis at 44psi at the rear on my Turbo and ended up overinflating them (= the tread was visibly more worn in the center then on the sides): by 9000 miles or so I had to toss them. I also suspect that keeping them at 44psi was what caused them to develop out-of-round characteristics, as if some of the belts in the carcass of the tires had slipped or similar (wonka-wonka-wonka). Note that I had an alignment done immediately before the set of Sumis was installed. I am now keeping the replacement rears at ~40psi but ready to drop some pressure at the first sign of overinflation.
Conversely, 36psi at the front hasn’t given me any trouble at all.

What's this "we" air boy?
I installed a set of 225/285 Hankooks in the spring and have been daily driving the he!! out of them since then. I run tire pressures around 38/42.
Price wise they are great, and so far treadwear has been acceptable (sorry no acces to records for actual mileage). I find them very comfortable on the street, that is to say they are soft and compliant, squishy is how I would describe them.
Grip wise they are only ok...I'm in the PSM a fair bit. I chalk this up to the tyres allowing the car to "slew" over and overcome the grip of the tread. In the wet they are ok. It rains here a lot and so far I've kept the shiny side up. I'm old enough to slow down in the rain I guess.
I hear them compaining in corners, not howling but maybe more grinding. On the road I don't hear them, but my hearing isn't the greatest and I usually operate with my windows and/or sunroof open so I get lots of wind noise (yes even in the rain).
For the street the Hankooks are really good, because they are so soft. They are not a multipurpose tire though. I keep a set of track wheels and tyres for autocross etc. There's no way I would drive the kooks on the track. It just wouldn't be any fun.
I will try a set of the Sumis next, or the Yokohamas mentioned earlier, but I will go through a second set of Hankooks on the rear first.

I've had Sumi's for a good year plus and noticed a much quieter ride around town. Good quality, especially for the price, but for my needs (no track) these are just plain good tires to use and will order another set when needed.

i used the sumi's on my audi TT and for the street they were good, but for autocross they slid alot. so me personally i would try something different. however i do not run them on my 996. what the heck do i have on there? (im out of town) haha
and as far as "the tire rack" i found that the local "savannah tire and auto" sold me the same tires for the same price, and i didnt have to drive 40 miles one way to pick them up!!
