Confessions of a Parking Valet
Below is what I saw on Yahoo news browsing around.
http://autos.yahoo.com/articles/auto...parking-valet/
•Speed in a parking structure or on the street while driving to a lot: "We once had a running contest going to see who could get the fastest top speed inside the hotel parking structure. I set the record with a 55-mph run in a Porsche 996 GT2."

Only an idiot hands the keys of a GT2 to a valet. When my wife and I go to our local steakhouse, the valet (who knows us and has been there every time we have gone) lets my wife out and then tells my to pick where I want the car up front and park it myself. He also refuses to keep my key. That's the closest it comes for me when parking the Turbo.

I used to be a valet at Ruth's Chris while I was in college, circa 1999-2001.
One night, after the Kentucky Derby, this guy came in and had us park his brand new 996. He tipped us $100 each. It was the highlight of my valet career.

If i don't know where the car can be parked safely ahead of time, i just take the beater instead and leave the Porsche at home. At least that way I can relax while eating/watching movie/etc....

I recently had my 996 valet parked at a local restuarant, and after tipping the valet at the end of the night, I noticed his hand prints on the driver's window and door...so glad I tipped him after washing my ride before going out.

Different perspective here. I used to valet my old 996 and still valet the GT3 everywhere they have a valet (well, when I drive it on the street). I'm sure some has done a burnout or something stupid. C'est la vie. I like the convenience and I have bigger things to stress over.

(edit: no concern with valet blasting stereo or going through my stuff. Stereo is just ok and the car is virtually empty b/c of track use [no loose objects or extra weight].)

I was a valet at a high rise, high rent condominium building in Dallas, TX when I was in college. I routinely parked Porsches, Rolls Royces, Mercedes, etc. The valets in my building didn't do crazy stuff like that (I didn't anyway), but I suppose that's because we knew the people who owned the cars, and we knew we would see them again.
The worst that our valets did on a regular basis was to try to fart in the car just as you were pulling it up to the door for the waiting customer, so that he or she would be surprised by the odor left in their vehicle. One of the valets ate lots and lots of jalapeno peppers... you didn't want him pulling your car up...

the first time I intended to valet, I saw the spot where I wanted to put the car, asked the attendant if I could park it myself. "no prob". walked up to his stand to pay him, since the restaurant entrance was in the same direction. second time I was there, I just parked it right there, paid the guy. kept the key both times.

He mentioned used to be a truck driver, a big rig truck driver. Once at a rest stop he was approached by a 2nd guy driving a car hauler, hauling used cars for delivery. This car hauler driver says his truck is overweight and would this 1st guy mind driving one of the cars from the rest stop past the weigh station to a meeting place just beyond the weight station?
The 1st guy said 'yes' and then the 2nd guy pulled a Porsche off the truck and the 1st guy drove the Porche about 30 miles to a pre-arranged spot where the 2nd guy driving the car hauler meets up with him and then gives the 1st guy a ride back to the starting point.
The 1st guy who ended up driving the Porsche claimed he 'had fun' while driving the Porsche.
Just in case the guy at the gas station wasn't making this up -- and he didn't sound or look like he was making it up -- not only pick your valet parking with care, but when you have a car shipped pick the shipper with care too, and be sure you note the car's conditon and mileage, with a camera, just in case.
Sincerely,
Macster.
