Default 996 Air Intake Noise by Gas Cap

I thought I saw a post on this issue recently. But, I'm hearing a loud whrrring noise coming from the air intake next to the gas cap. It seems to occur randomly, but always at idle. Or maybe I just notice it at idle. Any ideas?

Thanks,

Mike

IIRC, that's from the fuel pump.

Mike - Is this the post/thread you saw? Perhaps you two could collaborate.

Ryan, yes it does! So how bad is it? Everything else seems fine.

While on the subject in that area. Where does the gas caps rubber lanyard attach to? The nut on the left or an open spot on the hinge mount to the right or something? I don't want to connect it, just know.

I'm still in the process of figuring it out.... in the mean time i placed a piece of foam that will let some air in the tube just to stop the noise.. I'm sure you read through that post right? https://rennlist.com/forums/996-forum/575816-questioning-the-reliability-of-the-996-starting-problems-fuel-vent-system-pics.html

are you telling me the gas cap hangs there while ya pump gas??

doesnt that have the potential to leave marks on your paint? (my 99' the cap came clean off, as with the 86' - I dont like kids on a leash, or gas caps )

Hey Ed, maybe he's not talking about the length of the gas cap lanyard!

Thanks for the big picture Redridge. Sure helps a lot.

Interesting porsche making the lanyard just right to hang below the paint
I might try reinstalling it.

Mr Ivangene being an old NWer I sense like you having the cap hanging below the wheel well lip is setting us up for dirty water dripping in the gas cap. Ah yes the endless rains of the Willamette valley

not 2000, I had the dreaded code p0442... Evap system. So I check the gas cap (no lanyard).... and its gone! The benefit of not pumping your own gas in NJ. Called suncoast for a new cap and it came with the lanyard.... it must be a Mk2 thing.
