Tiptronic ATF change....
What ATF should I use besides "Porsche liquid gold"? Is Mobil 1 atf any good? Thx. Have minor sweating on tip and want to do a fluid flush.
Car is 2000 C2. Thx guys.

Since a Tip gets its fluid changed so seldom -- and generally not until it is exhibiting a symptom that finally prompts some attention be paid to it -- I can't see how fretting over a few dollars is a good use of one's time and energy.
Regardless, though, your call. I can't make any recommendation regarding transmission fluid cause I've never had anything but Porsche fluid in my (manual) transmissions. I know some have opted to use other brands and so far no one's reported horrible experiences -- AFAIK -- but of course the cars with the non-Porsche fluid do not have as much time on their transmssions with this other fluid so we won't know, probably never know how the fluid worked.
Were I seeking to solve a problem in something as expensive as a Tip I'd want to eliminate all unknowns and by switching to another fluid that's just adding another unknown. I'd want to put the same fluid back in the transmssion, the proper amount, by the book.
If the Tip is sweating fluid I doubt a fluid change will cure this. A fluid change is probably a good idea though. The Tip might still sweat a bit but still deliver thousands of miles of additional function helped by a fluid change.
Sincerely,
Macster.

I did my trans flush / refill with Pentosin IIRC for ZF trans ( which Audi and VW use), which my indi and his Audi specialist co-worker both confirmed. The PN#71141 Pentosin was not inexpensive; normally runs $23 /quart, but indi hooked me up at his cost since I have given him a few referrals over the last 6 months in addition to the $2-3K of my own Pcar expenses.
I think it ran about 6 quarts including the filter change.

Pennzoil.....is approved replacement as per renntech...I occasionally get a drip or two on my garage floor after a hard run....Im thinking the papergasket is leaking. Im gonna wait and replace everything. But there are good reviews on the pennzoil. Car has about 62,000 on it, and its never been changed.

I'm pretty sure the Tip is the Mercedes 722.6 trans that I have in the E320. This trans is usually very reliable, but you MUST use approved fluids other wise you are buying a transmission.
The trans must also be at 80c to measure the 'hot' temperature. Very finicky. There are a few known problems such as a pressure spring and the plastic control board that can affect shifting on higher mileage cars. They can develop slight leaks at higher mileage, but easy to fix.
Replacing fluid and parts this week....
(note: Valvoline Maxlife ATF is an approved fluid per MB)

Yeah i think the paper seal element after 10yrs is giving up. Im gonna post up a DIY when job is done and also a review of the pennzoil ATF. Shifting is smooth when warm so I figure the fluid is a bit low, no slipping but want to jump on this before it turns into a minimum of $3200 and a broken back repair....would be a nice time for a IMS update...but I dont need the headache just yet.

I used Redline Universal ATF. I spent countless hours, I mean countless trying to find out the spec number for the original fluid. Then, I spent many more cross-referencing with brands you can by here in states.
No indy shop would that I found would sell the Shell or Pentosin stuff to me. Bastages!
Anyways, after I put it in, the shifts were slippier and it would hit the redline in 3rd if I remember. Not good.
Would not do again. Get the stuff approved from Porsche.

+1, I do believe the mk1 ZF transmissions would take a pentosin fluid, which number only an indy could confirm. But use the Porsche branded fluid, and if possible only use to top up. There is nothing, I repeat nothing riskier for a 10 year old automatic transmission than a complete fluid replacement, even with the same brand fluid.

ok so the common consensus is to get the vw/audi/porsche stuff? whats the fill 6qts?

since the process involves refilling thru the refill port, you'll get some spillage as the fluid is pumped into the trans pan, the car must be level, rear wheels off the ground, engine running and someone to go thru the gear changes, until fluid starts to drip back out through the fill port. it should be good with 5 liters, but keep a 6th one because of some waste.

Correct.
The ZF takes a different fluid than the Benz transmissions.
A previous poster said he used the Redline ATF but I think the Redline ATF works in the Benz Tip and not the ZF.
For anyone out there wondering about the Benz Tips you can always get Benz fluid for under $10 or even the Valvoline Maxlife.

Yes sir. All those particulates of fiber material worn off the clutches over years really need to stay in the fluid to prevent slipping.

Dealer might not have the bottles though. Might just have the fluid in large drums. Local Porsche dealer is like that. In the service bay area fluid lines hanging down and if tech wants some oil or transmission fluid he just grabs a line.
Make a visit to your local Audi parts counter and see what you can learn. I've found as long as they're not buried with work most parts people at most dealerships are pretty helpful and willing to work with you.
Sincerely,
Macster.
