My name is David and I have been reading this forum for years. I just had never registered. I do actually have a question that I was wondering if any of you could help me with. I have a 99 996 with 40k miles on it and I was planing on doing the IMS update. I live in Tampa and was wondering if anyone has a shop to recommend to do this update. What is the standard/average cost of labor for this swap? I know how much the part is and was planning on ordering it soon. I just left all my tools at my parents house (Savannah, Ga) and do not feel like tackling the job on my own. I have never worked on a watercooler and the idea of it makes me a little weary.
Thank you for all the warm welcomes! The car is a c2 6spd and I really like the car (a little slow) but the IMS causes loss of sleep. I called easycare to try to get a warranty and when you get into the fine details with them, you will find out the IMS is not covered. It looks like Im going to have to get a warranty and an IMS swap which sucks.
I understand the loss of sleep thing... but keep in mind MANY MANY MANY MANY ims's worked perfectly today!!! My old car has 120k miles and is driving along, singing a song....all happy and living life to the fullest
dont loose sleep, read, learn, respond, prevent......enjoy!!
these cars are great and with the exception of a few parts they should last 200k or more. Now the parts can be changed, it's my opinion that one should take those steps...
if there was a warning or way of testing and/or the failure didnt cost $15-20k one could wait.... but those are not things that are offered prior to an event that could be more than most can absorb...

its just a phase, you'll get over it..... one guy here sold his perfectly good 996 cause he couldnt handle the idea that his engine MIGHT die someday. If you are one of those.... just sell and get a GT3.
I do really like GT3 and turbo model 911's, but I feel like I should wait a little longer to get cars like these. How can you be driven when you already have what you want?
Plus I would have to eat Ramen noodles for a little while and I did that enough in school to learn patience. I guess Im not as big of a Porsche fan as I thought.
