Did a search on this and herd different things about the whine from the 996. Mine whines and its only coming from the motor. It can be in neutral and when I rev the rpms up. It whines some what like a supercharger. This is normal right? The car runs strong right up to redline.

From what I've seen MK1 996s do have a unique whine to them. I believe this is due mostly to the timing chain set up they use. The newer chain types Porsche moved to don't seem to make quite the same noise.

I have a K&N cold air on my 996. Maybe that makes the whine louder?

your car is crying b/c i put a restrictor plate on it so i can keep up.....

that jet whine is loudest on the 3.4s. It sounds AWESOME.

suggest going to a GTG and have other 996 owners show you thier whine so you can compare to be sure it is normal....

from here its hard to tell

Mine whines. Never thought much about it. I actually thought it was the altinator. But it appears its normal.

mine did, I figured it was gear whine from the tranny from how the gears were cut.

Mine whines kinda reminisent of the aircooled cars. I just figured Porsche engineered it in to ease the transition from the aircooled days. I always loved the sound of the fan on the aircooled cars.
