'99 C4, 91K miles, experiencing gear whine. I took it to my local indy and we went for a drive. "Gear whine" the guy says, "could be the pinion bearing". Of course the only way to find out for sure is to tear into the transmission. I knew this would be the only logical response but I was so hoping for a more difinative answer.
His suggestion is when the time comes buy a used or remanufactured transmission because of the unknown issues he could find once he opens the case. The pinion bearing alone is around $550 and rings and other bits could add up quickly.
He also suggested I could try Lucas Transmission Oil, which I did. The whine was much quieter right away, time will tell if it stays that way.
Anyway, I was reminded that I hate hearing what I already know. Dang

Lucas is a band aid but it should buy you some time. I did something similar with Penzoil Synchromesh on one of my previous cars and the darn thing lasted me almost two years. YMMV
