Lost Reverse and 1st
Hi Guys, trying to pull out of my driveway this morning, reverse was grinding a bit, then it wouldn't go in at all. I tried 1st to get back into the driveway - and that didn't work either. However, I have 2nd-6th gear.
I have my 996 for about 3 weeks.
Anyone experience this before?

Has your transmission been making any noises since you've owned it? Whining noises, popping out of gear, vibrations you could feel through the shifter..etc..

welcome,
obviously sounds like a transmission issue with the syncros but it coould be a linkage issue or other issue with something loose, worn or mis-adjusted.
My advice it to have a local indy look at it and give you a diagnosis... most will do this for very little $$ and then you have someone actually looking at your car making the call rather than a bunch of us guessing over the inter-webs
GL and post your findings along with some pics

In the morning, it was a bit tougher to get it into reverse, and I guess even first, but after warming up, didn't seem to be a problem. Never had it pop out of gear once it was in, and the only noise was grinding sometimes when trying to get it into R or 1.

need more data
What year is the car?
"it was grinding" ?
like the clutch was not disengaging when you tried to put it in gear? If you put it in 2nd-6th does the engine load up a little, tack drop some. Can you put it in 1st-reverse with the engine off? If you can will the engine start? If\when it starts does the car lurch\try to go even when you have the clutch disengaged? If so it could be low fluid\leaky\bad slave cylinder\clutch master cylinder.

It just happened all of a sudden this morning. Was trying to get it into reverse, it wouldn't engage, then just wasn't able to get it in there. This is when I tried the other gears. With my foot off the clutch, I can go as far as possible toward reverse and first, and nothing - no grinding, no nothing. It's like it's in neutral.
Sorry, it's a '99 996.
When I say grinding, I mean like someone not using the clutch properly. Yes, I use it properly, just can't get those gears in now, and cannot physically go any farther with the shifter.
Clutch works perfectly fine for the other gears. I drove it back into the driveway in 2nd gear, and will be driving it to my mechanic later, just without 1st and reverse.
Previous owner never did anything to the tranny.
I had a throughout PPI about 3 weeks ago. I called my independent porshce mechanic, and he said he removed a tie wrap from the shift linkage, and "fixed it the way it should be". I'm going to take it back to him to have him check his fix.

Sounds like a cable issue to me as well. I'd imagine you will need to replace one of the two cables (the one responsible for side to side movement). If you're handy with this sort of thing, look at the attachments under the center console and at the transmission, I imagine it'll be obvious.

Check the cable housings that are connected to the trans under the car. If the ferrels slip out of the holder bracket, shifting becomes difficult. Often if the motor or trans has been removed they may not have been put back together correctly or fully seated.

On second thought, I'm not sure which cable it is, or it's got something to do with mountings, but as said above, I'd check the cables/connections also.
