Exactly......If Im driving a ticking time bomb....Im gonna have a blast until it detonates....plus I like the reasoning of driving a car "spiritedly" becuase its good for it.

Still quite a few CPO'd 996s available from many P-car dealers throughout the U.S.
If you are worried about $14K to replace the engine, spend and extra $4-5K and buy a CPO'd 996 from a dealer and enjoy 2 years of worry free motoring.
At the end of the CPO, buy the IMS bearing. It should have proven itself to be "the answer to the 996 problem" by then.

I have an '05, technically a 997, but with the same IMS and bearing as the 01-04. Mine's on its second year of CPO. When it expires I plan to get a comprehensive 3rd-party warranty from a company I've dealt with on several cars over the years. There are a lot of things that can and will go wrong on a 6-10 year old car, even a Porsche, and the cost is often shocking on what sensibly seems like a minor repair. Ten $1400 repairs cost the same as one $14,000 repair. At some point, if and when my car needs a clutch, if the engine hasn't yet blown up and been replaced under warranty, I will consider getting the IMS retrofit, and whatever other retrofits can be done without removing and disassembling the engine.

FWIW, the jury is still out on the longevity of the L & N IMS, maybe in the near future one of those engines will be inspected to check on the condition of the retrofit bearing... it's possible Jake Raby or Charles at L & N has done so already.

What's the longest mileage you've inspected so far? Was it just a visual/hand inspection or did you tear the bearing apart and measure the ***** and race against original specs? What's the longest mileage anyone with the retrofit has reported so far?

couldn't resist the temptation so I just bought an 02 w/ 2-year porsche warranty - don't know how to upload pics - grey w/70,000 kms on it
so I have to 2 years before I can start worrying - I am just going to enjoy it for 2 years and who knows what will happen after that
I have to admit - my #1 car was/is an NSX which I owned before for 3 years some 4-5 years ago and had to sell due to 2 kids - since then I was searching for a 4/2-door car with back seats that is close to the NSX experience in any of the enthusiast car categories and could not be satisfied with anything - not even the E36 or E46 M3 which I also owned
The only car that came close when I test drove it was a 911 and that's why I got one even though my kids are 7&5 and they don't like tight spaces but oh well

All words shown in BOLD indicate buttons. If you are just doing a "Quick Reply" you will have to click on Go Advanced button. Then follow the steps below:
Down below the part of the screen where you type the text and below the Submit Reply, the Preview Post, and Spell Check buttons, there is a Miscellaneous Options section followed by an Attach Files section.
In the Attach Files section, click on the Manage Attachments button.
You will now get a pop-up window. There are 3 buttons Browse, Upload, and Close this Window.
Click on the Browse button and now (in a new pop-up window) you can search on your PC to locate the pic you want to attach. Click on the name of the file you want and then click the Open button. Now click on the Upload button. After the file has been uploaded, you can click on Browse button and repeat the process to upload another pic or click on the Close this Window button.
After you click on the Close this Window, you will be back to the original "message" screen. Your pic file should be listed just above the Manage Attachments button.
If you are finished typing the text, you can click on the Submit Reply button and everyone will be able to see your great looking P-car!
If your pics are too large, you can resize them with MS Paint, or PhotoShop software, or you can do it online at this web site. http://www.resize2mail.com/
