changed ATF on my 2002 996 c2
Finally got this done yesterday. Was a bit apprehensive due to reading about how complex this is and how special tools are needed but it went smoothly and Im glad I did it.
Summary of steps:
1. lift car, remove last shield covering ATF pan
2. drain pan via screw on pan bottom
3. have a coffee break
4. replace washer with a new one and screw drain screw back.
5. remove pan, discard filter and gasket. Clean pan and magnet really well.
6. Reinstall filter (lube the o ring), reinstall pan using new gasket - its a hard rubber type gasket
7. open screw on side of pan. Open filler opening (yes there are 3 openings needed in the procedure)
8. using the special Porsche filler hose connected to a pump, fill new ATF (used Fuchs 3533 per Porsche docs) till it starts escaping the side opening on pan.
9. start the car, let idle in P then go through R-N-D 10 seconds in each, then back to P
10. keep adding fluid till it starts running out the side opening again.
11. check temp (used infrared temp gun on pan) mine read 37c and I had a small trickle running out the side hole. I closed the side hole at that point and closed the filler opening.
12. have coffee.
13. go for a drive.
Immediately noticed smoother shifts and less of a "clunk" into 1st.
having a lift, all the tools, and a manual fliud pump helped a lot - good to have a buddy with all this and good technical background with german cars
