Default Two windshield cracks in one weekend!

I drive my 911 very frequently for 2.5 years now, and on Saturday I get a sharp 'nick' sound resulting in a small star on the right side of the windshield going on a town boulevard about 45 MPH. A first!

Today, I get a second one, going the opposite direction, in the same area! No construction, nothing unusual. What are the odds?!

In some ways, I take this as good - it would have been more frustrating to fix the window only to get hit a second time shortly thereafter. Maybe I should wait for a 3rd hit before replacing anything.

Speaking of which, anything in particular you'd consider when choosing a mobile service to come by and replace the windshield? I am starting without any recommendations (in Tucson).

thank you,
John

PS. For what its worth at least it was a gorgeous convertible weekend to enjoy my car in Tucson.

That sucks...try the guys in the little red trucks. Probably want to contact your insurance first. They will have the 'recommended' choice.

Agreed- better to have them back-to-back instead of after a fresh replacement. I always have my insurance company direct me to a mobile installer so it's covered.

I'm fairly certain that the mobile guys (like Auto Glass Specialist) come to the dealers to do the repairs. The P-car mechanics are not glass guys. Removing a windshield or back glass is a whole new ball game.

Or you could to the Auto Glass repair shop, they get OEM part too. But just like anything else investigate the glass shop first and ask them about the cars they have serviced.

Two in the same area 1 day apart? Were the "rocks" that hit it round and copper colored?

Don't count your lucky stars yet. I had my Boxster's windshield replaced -- a tiny crack finally spread the width of the glass and was affecting my view out of the car -- only to shortly after the new glass installed to have a rock hit the thing right on the driver's side. A tiny star/crack is present but not bad, not nearly bad enough to have the glass replaced again.

I'm waiting until it really needs it.

Oh, I had first glass replaced through my insurance and Safelite was the company.

I priced the glass replacement job at various dealers and the cost was around $1300. Insurance adjuster told me almost all dealers use a 3rd party company to replace the glass. Not all but quite a few. We called a few dealers to find out who they used but were unable to get the info.

Safelite guy did a good job. I insisted the insurance company specifiy someone who had experience doing Porsches and similar cars.

Installer showed up with OEM glass. I checked. New glass matched old glass in every detail except the rear view mirror mount a bit out of position. Both Safelite guy and I agreed though it would not make any difference in the functionality of the rear view mirror and after probably 2 years this has proved to be accurate.

Install cost me my $500 deductible. Cost to insurance around $100. Had I had Safelite do it sans any insurance it might have been a bit more cause I suspect insurance company cuts a deal with Safelite and gets a better price than a private individual could get.

Even if I had to pay the full price still a lot cheaper than the dealer price.

Sincerely,

Macster.

You can get what they call a 'Bulls-eye' repair. If the crack is under the size of a quarter it can be repaired. A resin epoxy is 'drawn' into the crack. It will have a small spec when it is done. Most insurance companies pay for that in lieu of wanting to pay for a new windshield. The cost is around $75. I used to work at a glass shop about 20 years ago. Back than it ran $50.

What about the auto dimming rear view mirror, is that a problem when replacing windshield ?

I remember I had one broken on my old VW and it cost $800 to replace, I'd be worry to trust a mobile glass guy with that..

let us know how it went.. and if you have the auto dimming mirrors

I would not mind an excuse to get a new windshield, they pit so easily, The glass Porsche uses has the consistency of play dough. Cars with 30K miles look like they have 200K miles

I'll let everyone know how the replacement turns out. The crack spread so it definitely cannot be contained and the windshield must be replaced. I'll start by calling the insurance - it looks like i have no deductible glass replacement coverage at State Farm. I did a quick check online with 'Safelite' and the quote came back at ~$900. I'm leaning towards a reputable mobile service as I don't have half a day to burn driving across town / back to the dealership.

In the scheme of things I am not complaining too much, these things happen, just visit the 997 board and follow the thread on a 'horrific accident'. This is easy. Thank you for inputs.

In the end via my insurance company I had Safelite perform the replacement windshield in my garage. They sent a veteran installer and he did an outstanding job, the result undistinguishable from brand new. Am very happy with the result.
