Pop-up Lights or Bug-eyes, whit minor "mods" an NSX can look as modern as any "current" car, that is incredible considering they came in 1990, also the Na2 (97-05) with a good driver, STOCK, can do 0-60 in 4.6-4.8 sec .. not as fast as the most serious newest sportscars but still capable, now, with a SC or Turbo, then, well an enthusiast would agree.
Anyways, I Love Porsches, that's why I am here, NSX's do have soul

A friend of mine bought the first NSX in the Seacoast area in 1990 and paid $10k over sticker. We drove it for several hours that day and I'll tell you that the 'sound' the engine made, sitting just behind our heads was amazing. It was fast and handled quite well...it had a soul, but slightly different than a 'german' soul. After 2-3 weeks of ownership, my friens sold the NSX for a $15k profit to a man in Japan where he shipped the red and black NSX. I'd own one if I was in the market.

the NSX:
spent a weekend with one in '97 rented. very nice but very clinical, nice sound we were comfortable, after I took my wallet out of my jeans, but then where to put the wallet? Jackets same.
Driving it very precise steering planted ride but missed something, just did not stir my soul the way a 911 did when I first drove one.
It's not all about how fast something is, these cars (sports cars in general) provide plenty of entertainment but when it come down do it they need to tickle you somewhere some how and the Porsche tickles me. FWIW.

The Gordon Murray quote is somewhat incomplete. The NSX chassis was a study subject during the development of the F1 because it was the first of the mostly aluminium based monocoques to make it to production, therefore the only analogous road car designed to that date (the F50 was still swimming around in the 333SP's sack back then), and the first production sportscar which actually had a comfortable ride! We can thank the NSX for kicking ferrari into high gear and dragging Porsche screaming into the 21st century. after decades of almost no real improvements in supercars and high end sports cars, the twenty years since the NSX have given us enormous increases in performance, reliability, tractability, and overall quality at formerly complacent outfits like Porsche and Ferrari. Heck we've even got Corvettes that can corner, a Dodge with Nordschliefe lap records, half a dozen Mercedes that make 500+bhp, Boxsters that are faster than old turbos, and Astons that, well OK I'm not gong to include anything English.
We can thank our beloved Porsche 911 for single handedly destroying any chance the NSX may have had at commercial success though. I think the single greatest mistake Honda made with the NSX was pricing it in the 60s 70s 80s 90s over the course of its production, almost always in line with a well optioned 911. I've given the anecdote here before, but as a kid my friend's sister's husband went through his mid life and asked us kids which car to get (in 1990). We overwhelmingly voted NSX, it was a ferrari killer! All the magazines said it was faster, smoother, and honda reliable, and it looked like a frickin spaceship. He was sold before he even left for the dealership.
He came home in a shiny black 964. He said if he was going to spend the money, he wanted to get a "nice car", and that he did.

I'm fortunate to own both a NSX and a 996TT. I'm pretty sure my next sports car will replace the 996TT and not the NSX.
