Thought this was interesting. Not sure the parameters in the survey, but it was encouraging.

A lot of the cars graded with porsche would fall apart trying to keep up with the performance numbers of a 911. For instance a lincolns hub caps would fly off and it's bumper crumple or break trying to drag it to 60 or 190 in the 911's time. Then after 160 no prayers in the world could save that car and driver just thinking of touching the brakes or steering

The criteria they used were the number of problems per vehicle. Porsche averaged 1.1 problems per car across the marque, which was the best out of every single manufacturer in any category, not just performance cars. Average was 1.55.

The survey does not show..........IMS issue expertly handled by Porsche for 10 years by down playing it at every turn and....
Lots of people who drive the 996/997 Pcars don't even know where to look for oil leaks.....or even care to address it, as the majority are short term owners....less than 5 years.........and they just buy something new on lease..........

But is your 996 really 'unreliable'? Does anybody on this board have an 'unreliable' car? Mine sure hasn't been, and it's ten years old this month. In terms of starting when it's supposed to start and getting me where I want to go, and not inconveniencing me with unscheduled service needs, it's actually been flawless. One of the best cars I've ever owned.
I think if you take out the emotion and fear around the engine failure issue, and you take out the anxiety people have about their Porsches because they love them so much and just look at it as a car for a minute, it's not such a stretch that people would consider it reliable.
