I've got a '00 996 C2 with an obviously worn front wheel bearing. I've done this job on other cars but this is the first time on a 996. I've been able to find a lot of "how to's" on the C4 but none on the C2. So I made an ASSumption that this must be so easy it's not worth an article. Yeah, I know. Anyway, the wheel carrier is off and I'm kinda stuck as to how to get the hub out, bearings off, new bearings in, and hub back in. Any suggestions other than "don't try this at home" would be greatly appreciated. If my wife sees a wrecker take this away with a supplemental cardboard box of parts there will be no living with her.

According to the WSM, It appears it is pressed into the carrier. Do you have a press? If not you will have to take the hub and the new bearing to someone that can press the old one out and the new one in.

You could get a relatively inexpensive press at Harbor Freight . Make sure the geometry of the carrier can be easily oriented in a standard press otherwise take it somewhere that does this routinely to make sure it is set straight in the press.

Advance Auto Parts and AutoZone have tool loan programs. You put down a deposit for the cost of the kit (they've got loaner kits set aside), and get a full refund when you return it. I use it all the time for specialty tools for jobs like this.

Even a regular general machine shop could do the work for you if any exist in your area. (I did oodles of various press jobs when I was a journeyman machinist.)
I do not know the particulars of what sort of pressing out and in is needed though so you need to find a shop that has done these before or find good info which makes it clear what's necessary just to have handy to give to the shop if you take it someplace.
Sincerely,
Macster.

Like others have said, you need a press. I have a 20 ton one you can use for free and all kinds of press blocks, mandrils, etc. Anyway, even if you have the tools, it's very important to press the bearings in properly so you don't compromise their integrety. Many people ruin them on the install.
