Default Happy that I found out it's NOT IMS

Ok
had the marbles in coffee can rattle sound at idle for the last few days.
was worried SICK Ugh about all the IMS horror stories.

So I brought it into the dealer today - both catalytic converters are SHOT.
8 years emissions warranty expired Feb 11 2010 - they're going to call a regional rep to see if he'll do anything.

Had the serpentine belt, plugs, and oil changed while it's at the dealers...

We'll see....

I guess I'm a little surprised of all things the catalytic converters on these cars have such a high failure rate.
There hundreds of posts on RL alone...

Let's not start another Porsche hate-fest. The failure rate for all catalytic converters is 100%. They're consumable. The lifespan of a converter varies most widely with how a car is driven (they only work properly when they're hot, and can take half an hour to get to operating temps) and how the ECU is programmed to operate (e.g. a lot of cars will significantly retard timing and enrich mixture on regular fuel, which shortens the life of catalysts quite a bit). I've replaced catalysts on three vehicles over the years, none of them my Porsche. But even if there was a higher incidence - which I doubt - I'd bet it was traceable to the kind of lives these cars lead in North America rather than to a design flaw.

If the rep wont cover it's the perfect excuse for a new exhaust!

One of my cats went a few months back, just got in under the wire on the warranty

Exclamation

If you end up having to buy new cats try ordering a set from Oklahoma Foreign as last I checked you could get some good take-offs for less than $300.

http://www.oklahomaforeign.com/

I believe brand-new OEM cats from Porsche retail for $1000

awe - the marble thing doesnt last long before the "KA- THUNK" thing... IF you get the marble sound again, ya might want to stop immediately and not turn the car back on until the marbles are diagnosed as not the IMS....

FWIW

So just heard back from the dealer.
Porsche NA will cover parts $1800.
I will have to cover labor - $600.

Not that bad frankly.
Could've been worse.

Nice! That is a very favorable concession.

Out of curiosity:
Did you buy the car new - or from that dealer?
How many miles?

I bought it from a Danbury Porsche in CT.
Servicing dealer is Herb Chambers Porsche in Boston MA....
But I think it helped I was doing other maintenance things I was paying for (plugs, oil, serpentine belt)

Car has 53K miles on the clock
