Here is some pix, remove the air filter and housing, Takes a straight blade screw driver (7 screws) and one 13mm Bolt.

turn the engine to tdc till the marks line up as shown in the pix.

Here is my special tool. Made from 5/16 metal rod from lowes (thanks Jim, (capt Chaos))
Here is me sticking in my special tool. I love using my special tool!

Edit: No need to remove the accy belt for this. I did becasue I didnt know what I was looking for
Also the whole air cleaner box can be removed by just taking out the one 13MM bolt and the hose clamp off the intake. No need to remove the filter. The whole thing will lift out as one piece.

just a Q

how do you determine if TCD is on the fire stroke or the top of the exhaust stroke (or does it matter?)

wsm wants me to attach the trans jack at this point. Ahhh.. No, lets crack all the bolts that secure the engine to trans BEFORE we have this jack to work around

Wow, You've had your 996 how long? And you've already got it torn apart on the Garage floor.
If you ever pass thru Atlanta, call me so I can buy you a beer.
What went wrong? I never saw in the thread what you are attempting to fix.

got it! It wasnt too bad with a 3/4" ratchet. The 3/8 didnt cut it,

Edit: Actually when I said I got it here, Later I found out I did not. This bolt is wayyyyy the **** up there and you may want to try getting it from the drivers side also. I learned that when I was installing the clutch slave. I could feel the bolt on top and seemed to have more room on that side.

HA, got it with a slighly modified allen wrench. I feel like I just ate the bird.

Dont sweat this bolt, a large Allen fits it perfect.

hey if you have a set of metric and standard allen wrenches IIRC one size will fit that thing

Flat head screw driver on either side, Even pressure and it pops off. Nothing but a ball and socket
