I had the Carfax unlimited search last month for $40. I enjoyed looking at the car histories of potential cars. I realize it's not "the" answer but it helps elimitate some anyway. Now they don't have that option on the website. Did they get rid of it? Anybody know anything about this? Thanks.

Wow! Fourty-five dollars is way too steep for a five car limit. I can understand their problem with craigslist, but for $45 I expect at least 20 searches. I often search 10-20 vehicles while researching a specific model so I am definitely not going to pay $100-$200 just to investigate a vehicle I may not purchase.
Time to switch to http://www.autocheck.com/

Yes it's true, no more all you can eat with carfax. But the service provided by Experiens Autocheck is pretty similar and they give you 2 months of unlimited access for the same price as 5 carfax reports.
What I found, and I had both services at the same time.
Autocheck has more information supplied by auctions. Many of the Porsches are leased or turned back and go to auctions. The auction house does a pretty detailed investigation of the cars and notes any damage found at the time of the auction. Accident reports show up here also. Autocheck is pretty good on the body damage reporting.
Carfax has more information provided by repair shops. Carfax must have entered into an agreement with the repair shops to pay to get the repair summary. I saw things like replaced ignition switch, performed scheduled service etc.
They both have all the info on smog tests, titles, liens and registration renewals.
I used Autocheck to scan masses of cars and then Carcheck to run reports on ones I was serious about.
