Default hit 69k miles today

nothing special. but given the recent increase in IMS horror stories and concerns, thought i'd post. original engine, original RMS.

only reason i noted the mileage was because i had a coolant flush/fill and transmission fluid drain/fill done today. tranny fluid came out looking new and green coolant was replaced with red coolant.

my indie did receive a package from LN engineering while i was there. it was a replacement IMS with puller tool. he's replacing the IMS bearing on a 01 or 02 boxster. i'm going to try to see if i can get pics when he replaces it. one thing to note was i was surprised by how small the IMS bearing is.

My wife told me the same thing last weekend. Only after I remembered that I no longer own a Porsche did her comment really **** me off!

Congrats on 69K miles!

Yasuro- can you check to see if the bearing in the Boxster still contains original grease or engine oil? Looking forward to pics.

I'm ready to turn 100k - original engine and IMS. Runs great and no leaks. Daily driven.
When I was shopping, I found a 140k car with original engine and IMS. Ran great and no leaks.

Planning on upgrading IMS and replacing other 'wear' items of engine, very soon. (will take pics)

Why? she was just telling you that your shaft was a tight fit in the bearing.

I want to say congrats on the 69K. But isnt it sad you even felt like you had to post it?

it is a bit sad, but i'm think that most IMS horror stories are self-selecting. i think most 996 owners have no major problems so they don't post about it, etc. hence my desire to post the fact my i have a higher mileage car and nothing major has happened.

that being said, i have looked into the IMS bearing replacement offered by flatsix and LN engineering. i might consider that when it comes time for my clutch replacement.

my indie told me one of the signs (not inclusive by any means) that LN told him to look for is metal in the oil. this could be caused by the IMS bearing seal weeping and the bearings starting to shed/breakdown, which would be a sign of imminent failure. i did upgrade to a magnetic drain plug last oil change and cut open the filter. no metal or any other debris was found. also the engine can, but not always, show signs of an untraceable vacuum leak when an IMS breakdown is imminent.

outside of a clutch replacement, i think the only major maintenance item for me is to replace all the coolant hoses sometime in the next 4-5 years.

but my biggest bit of self-prescribed preventive maintenance is twice yearly oil changes and make sure i never really run the engine below 3000 RPM. basically just driving the thing like i stole it

Yeah, I think that performance driving just makes the Porsche happy.

Low & Slow = unhappy Porsche....

Some truth to that, however, I think the act of 'driving' our Porsches is the key, as opposed to admiring our cars. They like to be driven...not sitting.
