Default Did Something Stupid but...

did I do any serious damage? I was using the rear jack point to get a jack stand under the front jack point on the driver side of the car. As I was positioning the jack stand, the jack slipped off to the rear. As a result, the car fell down and the jack stand went through the plastic that is to the right (rear) of the front jack point. Obviously, the plastic broke but is there anything under there I should be concerned about? It seems like everything is OK but wanted to check with the collective wisdom here...

Serious damage? Not likely, but there's always the possibilty. To verify the extent of the damage, cosmetic and minmal to something more serious, the car should be raised and the broken plastic panels removed and new ones ordered. Then the area underneath and covered hidden by the panels should be inspected.

There can be coolant, brake, gas, or A/C lines crushed. There may not be a leak but the system to which the lines belong could be compromised. Not saying this happened only that you need to see if it did. The area might be "empty".

Also, worst case, if the sheet metal is bent the car should be inspected by a qualified tech to determine is the metal damage could or has affected the car's alignment.

I know this seems overkill but you should strive to undo any damage that the accident might have caused. If for instance the sheet metal's bent and the car's rear alignment out excessive tire wear can result. While the alignment could be adjusted by using normal alignment adjustments -- come next tire replacement time -- if the tech has to use too much adjustment and notices the damage he could enter that the car has been involved in some "accident" and not been properly repaired. This could affect the car's warranty.

Were it my car I'd want very much for peace of mind to ensure the car's put right. It may be the damage is limited to the damaged plastic panels and some minor sratches to the metal underbody. These should be touched up to avoid letting corrosion get a foothold and that's the extent of what needs to be done, besides of course replacing the damaged panels with new ones.

Sincerely,

Macster.

You're lucky the car didn't come down on you! Good luck, hopefully it's just plastic that was damaged.

Stupidity! I didn't have the jack pad squarely under the jack point on the rear and I raised the car pretty high on the jack. I wasn't watching the back but was checking for clearing of the jack stand up front. Very stupid on my part.

Patrick, like Macster said, I'd pull the rocker panel and look for damage beneath. Troubling that the car slipped off the jack with weight on it.

Lifting can be tricky; I use wheel chocks and the e-brake to minimize the possibility of the car shifting while lifting. Glad you are OK.

I also use the Porsche round jack plate with the raised circle in the middle - to fit inside the jack point hole, adding stability. My worst fear is dropping the car onto it's rotors while causing huge damage to the fender, etc. Knocking on wood!

PS . . . The plastic cover pieces are not too expensive. I had one replaced a while ago. Part number and cost via Renntech . . .

Quick follow-up... got the car on a lift and removed the wheel well liner and the plastic piece inside of that (behind the wheel). I got off mostly lucky, but will have to replace a clutch line that I pinched pretty good. There are a lot of lines that run in this spot, so word of caution - be careful not to drop the car down on a front jack stand that's not in exactly the right spot!

CMP, as in Garand shooting? Or does Porsche use CMP for a rally/event??
