Default For those curious, the 997/987 shift ***** do fit the 996/986..

Just transferred a shift **** from a 987 to my 986, so they do fit. All you need to do is remove the 997 **** from the boot (under the boot, there's a plastic clip that releases it from the **** after you unscrew it counter clockwise and pull, and then reuse that and the plastic ring that secures the leather boot on the 996 boot). To release the boot from the shift **** on your 996 shifter, just go under the boot and cut the zip tie that is holding the boot to your 996 shift ****. You will connect the 996 boot to the 997 **** using the plastic clip and ring retainer you got from the 997 shift boot. Voila...

Note: This will only work if you have the updgraded 996 shift **** and boot currently in your car, for the standard teardrop shaped **** has a boot that does not come off the **** (unless you cut it off, in which case this mod will work too).
