Default Oil scavenge pump

Hello guys.
Is the scavenge pump interchangeable between the 996 and the 997?
I got new pumps (997 part) and some of the dimensions are different.
the old one is thicker and has a smaller drive key, but I am interested in confirming the fitment as the oil passages are slightly different in size and shape.
when I look at the part marked as 4-6, the oil passage is smaller on the new pump, and larger on the 1-3 side

the new pump is on the left. the part number I got is 99710702105.

Yes, it is the newest version ( 997-107-021-05 ) and fits all m96/m97 . That part has been superseded many many times...

thanks Skip.
that’s why I was asking. Part number kept changing on me maybe 5 times during the search 😄.
not an expert, but by looking at the new pump compered to the old one, I’m not sure if they tried to improve it or just to make it cheaper.

....and they made it "foolproof" for the 997 engines, notice the "Slotted" bolt hole? That is so it cannot be installed wrong on m97 engines ( it can still be installed wrong on M96 engines)...

Doesn't the bank 2 scavenger pump have a vacuum pump attached to it for the m97?

Yes it does..... but that vacuum pump fails often on cars that are Tracked or driven hard( they get loaded with oil and/or come apart).... I have converted a few of those back to the regular scavenge pump and converted back to intake manifold vacuum for the power brake booster and vacuum change-over valves systems...

I see they haven't made any provisions to protect the pump...

Whats the best way to protect the inlet port of the pump from sucking in debris/broken chain roller parts, that seizes it up/breaks off the snout and totals another m96...?

I put a high powered magnet attached to the outside of the big Welch plug located at the inlet to catch any ferrous debris....

I remember Jake saying when he is building FSI engines that he installs some mesh screens on the inside of the heads at the inlet...( I don't know if ALL engines get this or not) ...

Thanks for the reply. IMO anyone building an M96 should address this all to common incorrectly diagnosed m96 engine failure route/problem.

Any pics..? Is the magnet long enough to protect the total length of the inlet port..? will it catch everything in a viscous turbulently flowing fluid..? Seems even a small chunk of missing chain roller parts has been enough to cause big problems/failures.

Any clue how to secure a protector screen, Would be nice to have it set up kind of like the primary pump screen used on its pickup ? that seems to catch stuff.

I have no idea how Jake secures the screens,( just guessing I would say a two-part epoxy,) that's why I chose to use high powered magnets ..The Welch plug is 18mm, I think I used a 15mm round neo magnet to attach to it...I have no idea if it has caught anything, I haven't been in there in decades...lol

The biggest problem with the scavenge pumps nowadays is inexperience and installing them in the wrong orientation..
