The New Official "Things you didnt know about your 996" thread

I have a 2002 C4 Cab.
1. With the top open, push and hold your finger into the hole where the top locks in and it will bypass the safty mechanism that is stopping you from using the rear windows.
2. There is a switch for this right below the fuse panel.

I'm still not sure what you mean by "the hole where the top locks in."

Yeah, accessories only disconnects when the key is physically removed from the lock. But if you reinsert it, it won't enable accessories again before the ignition has been on.

This has been repeated many times and I knew it already, but for some reason it cost me $200 to learn yet again. Had not driven my car in a few days; would not turn over. Charged battery, tried to turn over, fail. Trickle charged....no start (no click, no nothing). Thought it was the clutch release sensor; was not. Called shop, had it towed. On arrival the shop inserted key, turned one way, turned the other way, turned one way, and finally turned the other way...and over-rode the electronic lock out that we all know kicks in when the car isn't used for a period of time.
I had tried this, but not as many times as I was supposed to, and so I paid my tow fee to learn how to do it properly. The key (pun) is literally when the key fob doesn't light, the electronics have been decoupled (or something like that).

You could've ordered an armored 996
The 996 was Porsche's first attempt at a bullet proof car, literally. (Reference my post elsewhere in the forum for link to the video)

I saw the following posted on another form; the 996 was featured in the last "Gone in 60 Seconds" movie. It was code named "Tina". But, it was actually a '78 re-bodied as a 996 with the intention of using it as a stunt car. It later sold for $35k. This might have been posted elsewhere but hasn't been posted here and I believe it qualifies as legit 996 "things you didn't know" material.

Toe Kills tires, not Camber. Don't have a 996 yet (in here learning) but my ex-track DD (220K) 95 M3 runs -2.6F / -1.5R and I get 40K plus with my tires. My Z06 runs -1.5F / -1.3R and same story, both run minimal (0) toe...

I've had a few tires wear down to the cords on the inside but look great on the outside.
I don't think this is peculiar to the 996, but they will eat rear tires faster than your BMW.

Maybe they get a toe change through the suspension travel. (not unheard of) I have 220K on my M3, have owned is since 97K, have put 3 sets of tires on. I auto-x a little, have fun with it every day. Had a toe issue up front and it did kill tires, got it fixed and no more issues. Peeps always assume Camber does it, but its quite minimal, the tire flexes. Toe "scrubs" tires, thats what kills the inside.
I would think with wide meats on the back of a 996, it wouldn't need much camber. Thats how my Z06 is, much less than the Bimmer. (BMW max 17/40/255, Z06 18/35/295)

read this some where, nice quote..."the 1999 996 and the boxster are pretty much identical from the front seats forward... but all that really matters is what is from the front seats backwards" .

If you were one of the few that ordered PSM1, the background color of the screens matches the interior color. In my case the screen is Savannah Beige on my 2000 C4 Cab.

Only on the Mk 1 (1998 to 2001) The rear spoiler is provided with a spoiler system. Every engine start up, the rear spoiler warning light will come on the dash. Directly under the speedo and rev counter. The system checks itself as the car moves up to 4mph and if the spoiler is going to work correctly (deploy at 75mpg and retract at 37mph), the light then goes out and STAYS out. That is our only indication that the spoiler is working correctly as we cannot see the spoiler when driving. If it is not going to work properly then the light will stay ON. If during a deployment at 75mph it does not complete the movement within 15 seconds, the spoiler motor will cut out to save damage, plus the warning light will come back on the dash to indicate a fault. The Mark 1 also has the manual racker switch function by the left leg. One push on the top of the rocker to deploy. Push and hold the lower part of the rocker to retract or part retract the spoiler
