Default '03 996 Convertible top issue - gap in 2nd panel

My 2003 911 has a slight gap on the driver's side convertible top, along the side of the 2nd panel. It looks almost like the "cable" is not pulled tight on that side compared to the other side so when then top is fully closed it does not counteract the tension applied by the elastic strap. I have searched but have not found a similar problem in here. Anyone else had this problem or know how to replace/tighten the cable on one side? Thanks for your help.

Is the cable snapped onto the ball on that side?
Start with the top up and latched. Cycle the top towards open, stop when the latch is about 8-10" from the windshield header. The large cover should be up and towards the rear this allows access to two cables, one on each side near the base of the top. Make sure the cable sockets are are both snapped onto thier respective ball mounts.

The "large cover" you refer to that should be up and towards the rear...do you mean in the middle front where the latch connects into the windshield slot? Thanks.

The large cover that covers most of the top when it is down. It lives above the engine/transmission junction. On top of the car towards the rear of the car behind the passengers compartment. Between the passengers compartment and the engine cover. A little in front of the center high mounted stop light on the rear of the car. On top of the car behind the canvas convertable top there is a cover that has to move up and towards the rear (engine compartment end) to allow the top to fold in to the storage well. Porsche calls it a LID part# 996.514.011.01. When you have the top in the "service" position as described above the "lid" will be up and towards the rear of the car. You will have access to the two cables I referenced.

There is a service position for a cab top. There is good documentation for installing Smartop. You may want to go to the site and download the installation instructions to enter into the service position. You will see the ball and socket cable once you are in the service mode.
