Default litronics fail to ignite-sometimes

01 996, both will fail to ignite. If you then push the high beams lever, they ignite and rotate up as they should along with the high beams. Could it be a faulty light dash switch or anything else/

Did you check your blinker fluid?

(Sorry, I couldn't resist)

Had the same issue on my 01 X5. Had to replace the bulbs. Lights flickering is usually HID bulbs as well. Go for original Philips as troubleshooting HID issues is "nightmarish". Also do both fail to ignite the same time or will one turn on, while other won't? Does turning the switch back off to on help?

It could be either the bulbs or the ballasts.

i had sort of a similar problem that a new headlamp switch cured. It's a cheaper solution instead of the bulbs or the ballast.

Same here, if both do it, much more likely it is the headlight switch than bulbs or ballasts. Had to replace mine with only 39k miles on it. Not expensive and easy to do. Got mine from Sunset for about $70 IIRC.

My guess would be your ignitors are failing.

It happened to the Lits on my 996 as was fixed under warranty.

+1 for headlight switch - I would start there - there have been many people report this problem where that was the culprit part.

Same issue with my car but sometimes just turning them on and off would gett them to ignite. Sometimes a high beam flash would do it. In the end (about 4 months of this trial and error) they failed to ignite almost all the time. The solution was the light switch. Has been almost a year now and never fails to light.

I also had the same problem a couple of months ago. It turned out to be the light switch as well. I would advice you yo start with that. Change the switch is an easy DIY.

See post #24 of this thread for p/n: LINK

As far as a DIY, check over on Renntech. It's very easy.

*Remove Headlight switch
*Remove A/C vent
*Remove Headlight Switch Assembly from A/C vent
*Remove Headlight switch assembly from wiring harness.
*Reverse steps

Hi, I am having same problem with Litronics on my 2004 986 Boxzter S. Bulbs flickering, replaced them and new bulbs did the same until now the main beam does not work at all.

So I am assuming the headlight switch will fix this based on all of the earlier posts. I checked the p/n and that fits a 986 also.

Where I am stumped is for DIY, where is the headlight switch located and how do I get to it to replace it.... Any links or suggestions anyone?

The headlight switch is to the left of the ignition switch. It's connected to the **** you turn to turn the lights on and off.
