Question Newbie here with a troubling question re: Engine RPM 'Flutter' and Shifting issues...

Hi Everyone,

Im new to the site and express appreciation in advance for any help I can get.

Im in Australia at the moment and recently purchased a 1998 996 3.4l. 160,000 kms, or 100,000 miles and in impressive condition........ except for this one small problem....

The car likes to shift rather quickly and I find myself in 5th gear doing 1400-1700 RPM at only 70-75kms/hr... (5th at roughly 45 MPH) Additionally the RPM's "flutter" with about a 70-100RPM change randomly. I know its small, but I believe the car may recognize a fault with Fuel/Air, or Speed Sensor?

I was advised by the dealer to replace the Air Mass Sensor, (They charge $1300) I bought one new for $420 and this is not the problem.... They ran diagnostics and mentioned that (Please dont quote me on this) that cylinders 2/4/6 might be missing due to the AMS or possibly an O2 Sensor? It wasnt the Air Mass, and I dont see how an O2 Sensor would cause this problem.....

Unfortunately Porsche is ridiculously expensive here in Australia and not too many mechanics work on them...

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Hi Steve,

Any advice you can give me regarding a QLD mechanic would be great. I am on the Gold Coast if you know of anyone, that would truly be great. My mobile is 0447 466 177
Congrats on the Cayman S!
