Front crankshaft oil seal replaced
Hi there,
found a car to pursue in a nearby state but have a question or two. Carfax report lists the Front crankshaft oil seal as replaced and I'm looking to understand what this is. Does not sound like RMS and can't be IMS. During the same service the tranny was replaced (13k miles). Are the two related? They're listed separately on the CF report.
Also, the car has had 5 AC charges... is this an anomaly or normal in S-Cal? One more oddity… the spark plugs were changed at 35 miles..? CF has lots of service history on this one... reminds me of a book I use to read to my kids - if you give a moose a muffin, he'll ask for a cup of milk.
Thanks in advance (of PPI),
John

Sounds like the car is a lemon to me. AC system should be able to retain pressure even after many years, the only reason why you want to recharge is because there is a leak somewhere. Sounds like there is a slow leak, and it could still be leaking...
The front crankshaft seal is located behind the main pulley, this is the pulley that basically drives all accessories devices.
I just replaced one on a 964 engine.

Ok, here it goes
'02-04 C2, Cab or coupe (see previous posts as to why I'm considering both). Car cannot be:
- red or black (black is beautiful but after 5 in a row I’m ready to move on)
- automatic / tip
Car is:
- is in the <50k mi range
- well documented with a proper service history
- accident free (door skins, bumper replacements are fine)
- well cared for exterior / interior
I’m not focused so much on options, nor do I care about aftermarket upgrades (especially stereo, interior bits, wheels, etc). The one upgrade I do value is a sport exhaust.
The ideal car is artic silver with black interior. Heated seats, and a rear wiper if a coupe would be nice given I’m in the Seattle area.
Lastly, the drive has to be right. No slop, unexpected noises, or drips from the brakes, suspension, and driveline.
In terms of price, my thought is I should be able to purchase the above car for $28k, or less (realistically not expecting to find an ’04 for that price but do believe there is an ’02 or ’03 out there with my name on it). I’m not chasing the garage queen with 18k miles.
Thoughts?

Speaking more with the owner of the car that was the focus of this thread at the begining and am beginging to become more comfortable with the situation. Below are his comments re: the chronic AC issue. He also just advised me to have a PPI done and believes there will be zero issues. We'll see. thanks for the help so far. And for Tim - aka gotta and hada911, who I don't konw, the car is Lapis Blue with grey interior. Sound familiar?

well below are the current owners comments. He's gathering records from Beverly Porsche for inspection.
I wasn't happy, because the seller didn't disclose it to me. I called Porsche in Atlanta, and they contacted the service manager at Beverly Hills Porsche. The entire engine had to be removed to check the AC from the source. The leak was identified, and there hasn't been a problem since.

Front main seal replacement and transmission replacement unlikely to be related. Would be nice to know the mileage when front seal replaced and transmission replaced.
5 A/C charges not normal for anywhere. (My 02 Boxster on its original A/C factory fill as was my 03 Turbo I bought used recently.) There's a leak in the A/C system and dealer/service department never used dye to find the leak.
As for spark plugs being replaced at 35 miles (not 35K miles?)...
Nothing above by itself enough to reject the car but lump them all together...
Also, this car's in another state so you're looking at buying long distance which means it is a bit more inconvenient to really check out the car.
I'd walk away.
There's always another car.
Sincerely,
Macster.
