Default Short Shifter Problems

Anyone install a short shifter kit and find it to be real notchy? I have an '02 C4S with the kit in it, and I recently drove another's car with one too. His car shifted much more smoothly than mine. We cannot find any difference to speak of.

Does anyone know if the small spring that is in the plastic block on the left of the shifter contribute to the "notchiness" that is felt? That appears to be a very short, but strong spring that appears to help orient the shifter.

Thanks,
Steve

I've got a B&M and I originally found it a bit notchy, although after putting about 3000 miles and a DE on it, I'm really not noticing it any more.

B&M. A bit notchy when cold, but after that, like a bolt action rifle.

The spring has nothing to do with the notchiness, it is totally dependent on your cable adjustments, and your particular tranny. I screwed with my B&M for days and could "move" the notchiness around, but not eliminate it. At first I thought I could get used to it, but first & second just never felt right to me. I ended up installing a 997 shifter and shorter Boxster S type ****/boot and so far it is exactly what I was looking for. Short accurate snicks when I shift, no vagueness. Sometimes a fresh tranny fluid change also helps.

I don't know what type it is. It was in there when I purchased it. However, it is so much more stiff than my old one, that my wife won't drive it.

How do I go about adjusting the cables? Is it very difficult?

Thanks,
Steve

There is a plastic "tool" of sorts that you can purchase from the dealer. It was pretty cheap as I remember. Its sole function is to hold the shifter in position while you attach the cables. You can work with the cables a bit while the tool holds the shifter in position.

I am not too sure that playing with the cable adjustment will help with the lack of smoothness. The short shifter just isn't smooth. I disagree with the comments on precision. While I like short shifter, I think it requires more from the driver to shift well.

If you do not like it, an option for you is to buy the 997 shifter. It has a somewhat shorter throw than the stock 996 shifter, but a good bit longer than the 996 short shifter. Either the stock 996 shifter or the 997 version are smoother in exchange for longer throws. Given that it is a cable operated shifter, it is never going to feel like a directly connected shifter.

OK, thanks. I just found out that it is a factory short shift kit. The previous owner installed it himself. However, he is a pretty capable guy, so I trust he did a very good job installing it.

Just thought I would ask. You know we have to always find something to tinker with.

Thanks,
Steve
