Where did you get those prices from? I just checked Tire Rack and they're $342 for the new PS2 model. Still expensive but not quite $500.
Going back to the original conversation, when mine wear out I’ll probably keep going with the PS2s since it’s likely I’ll have to replace the rear before the front anyway. So I’ll be only purchasing two tires compared to switching to another brand will force me to purchase four new tires and there goes any cost savings.

The Star Specs are amazing for the money. They crush the PS2s @ auto-x. The only downside is that they are somewhat noisy.
I have them on my S2000 and have been extremely pleased. More grip than my heat cycled out Victoracer R comps.
I've had PS2s on the C2S and they were fine - just not $496 per rear tire fine. Never tried the Sumi IIIs but was unimpressed by the Sumi HTRZ IIs (had them on our LeMons Festiva)
If you want quiet and comfy tires - don't get the Dunlops. If you want serious grip - they are excellent tires.

I've got Star Specs on my 04 Boxster S, and I must say- they are absolutely amazing autocross tires. I've had excellent experience with these tires in the wet and dry. I did notice a little more road noise with them, but it's not like they're howling or anything, they're just a little louder than my old tires.
The R888s howl. Not really a big deal since they are R comps but I am still blown away by the grip of the Star Specs.

What I want to know is why they used the PS2 as the comparison tire? This was only the 4th place tire in their 2005 tire test.

Conspicuously absent were the new Yokohama Advan Neova AD08 (or the old AD07) and Goodyear Eagle F1, which both bested the PS2 in 2005.

The Yoko is nowhere near as comfy or quiet as the PS2. Put the AD07/08 against the Star Spec--that's a good matchup.
Goodyear for some reason refuses to make the F1 in any size that might fit the back of a Porsche. The F1 and PS2 are great competitors otherwise. Just not for us.

I did notice the Star Specs are a lot more sensitive to temperature and pressure than my old tires. I'd used to just set my pressures cold the night before and drive all session like that- when I tried that with the Star Specs, I was all over the damned place on later runs. Now, I bleed air between runs like they're R-Comps, and performance stays consistently good.

Looking at the price matrix, I think they were culling "cheap" tires specifically; if the $192 PS2s are excluded, the Dunlops, at $137 apiece, were the most expensive tires on the test. The neovas and RE11Rs are all about $50 more than the Dunlops, aren't they? I would still like to see them directly compared, but I think that's why C&D chose to do Ling-Lings as oppose to something people might actually WANT to see compared to the PS2.

Exactly. The whole point of the test was to test cheap(er) tires against a top line expensive tire.

Wow, I just read the article.. I think they could have used a better group of tires to match up with the Dunlaps. I mean, ling longs?? Come on! I do agree on the assessments of the Dunlaps but this test would hardly convince me to purchase them due to the sad group of tires they match them up against.
Need to get new stock tires for the Carrera 225/40x18F, 265/35x18R.
I had Michelin PS2's which I was happy with, but for a daily driver I am trying to find something more affordable and came across this recent summer tire test in Car & Driver.
Doing a forum search I see a lot of recommendations for the Sumitomo HTRZIII, which is what I was leaning towards. The test doesn't include that tire, but gives the Dunlop Direzza Sport Z1 Star Spec top ratings.
Any thoughts or advise appreciated TIA.
