I have to go through inspection soon and also will be purchasing a warranty, which requires a dealership inspection.
So I believe it makes sense to reinstall the OEM airbox.
It looks like the MAF needs to be relocated when installing a K&N.
Does anyone have any advice with respect to reversing off the K&N to the OEM box (asking about how to do it, not about HP or sound)? Was the MAF altered or modified in anyway for the K&N fit? Or do I just take of the K&N, and then drop the box in and just hook up the large hose and the MAF with the two screws?
I have the OEM box, with a new filter in it. I may have some grommets missing, which I guess I will have to get from the dealer (unless someone knows that I can get the miscellaneous airbox parts at a hardware store??).
Also, someone once posted the airbox diagram, but I can't find it now. Could that someone repost that diagram?
Thanks,
Todd

Yes, that is all you need to do. It is a very simple procedure and requires just regular tools except for the special screwheads on the MAF sensor itself.
1st time 20-30 minutes, 2nd time 10 minutes tops.

What is the benefit of the K&N system? I tried a K&N filter in one of my 993's and got rid of the K&N later.

Based on my research, the purpose of the K&N is to increase HP and improve sound.
This is a source of much heated debate on this forum, and I am not knowledgable enough yet to have an opinion on this.
Some people do believe they have an impact on the MAF, due to the oil in the filter, as well as other believed impacts to the engine. I am changing back to OEM as I want to get the car back to stock, as I am going to get a warranty which requires an inspection by a P dealership. I do love the sound of my car now, so if the sound dramatically changes, I may be disappointed.
I've read where others install the K&N, and then they perceive and/or experience a HP increase and love the sound. If you search "K&N" on the 996 forum, you will find a plethora of information and debates.

we dont use the word "plethora" nearly enough
good job and yes you are correct...the benefit doesnt seem to out weigh the risk, I opted out of the K&N experience

You'll need a security Torx 20 for the MAF screws. If you have a Harbor Freight near you, you can buy a whole set of the different sizes for possible future use for under $10. You might want to PM David Borden on the 996 forum. Just do a search for his name. I just found him a stock airbox so he could retro back to stock...and he's just gone thru the procedure. He's a very knowledgeable and helpful fellow who will be more than willing to help you out. I don't imagine this is a very difficult retro.

Uhmmm.... the "new job" ended in mid-December of 2008. Investors sold 65% of the stores and laid off 150+ of the 185 corporate people. I was one of them.
So I moved from Charlotte to Dallas for a 9 month job. Still haven't sold the Charlotte house. Having two mortgages and one income sucks! ![Frown](https://rennlist.com/forums/images/smilies/frown.gif)
I am currently doing some consulting work that will last for about four more weeks.
