Default Rust on my brake disks

Hi there,

I noticed something which I found quite concerning. Since this is my first Porsche (996 -99, 88000 km ) I just want to check if I need to replace anything or if it is normal. I can't really say when the disks were replaced the last time but I want to know if it is something I should be prepared to replace at the next service. Also when I've washed the car you can see "rust spots" on the disks, that will dissapear and stay gone after you have used the breaks.

I havent spoken to the dealer where I bought it yet, I thought it would be better to ask you guys first what you think since I'm a beginner.

So, these three pictures probably say more than a thousand words. Do I need to replace the disks? Do I need to be concerned. All disks on all wheels look like this. Other than this the car is in perfect shape, no problem at all and in perfect condition, no other rust.

By the way, these three pictures are from the same wheel.

Thanks!

David

PS. Sorry for the high res, but I thought that it would help to see what I'm talking about

Yeah, I can see it all right.

Perfectly normal. No worries.

Rust on the edges is normal. The rust spots on the surface of the disc will simply be scrubbed away when braking. I would only be concerned if there is any type of pulsation when braking or if the rotors have worn too thin.

I get this, too, when I let the car sit for a day or two. It's one of those problems with the best possible solution... drive the car!

Thanks man That was what I wanted to hear.

So now when I dont have to put money on that, what should I settle for. Sell the car and buy the facelift version or invest in an Aerokit for this one?

Nope, I havent noticed anything like that. When I break it breaks as normal. I had an old Saab a few years ago which I really destroyed breaks on, so I know how it feels when they are "****ed up"

Thanks

Normal - but check the overall thickness, they appear to have been around awhile.

Rust on the rotors is normal, since the rotors are iron.

Now post pics of the rest of your car!

Are you saying you think your brakes might be broken? Because you brakes can break or brake depending. Or if your mechanic gives you a break, your brakes might not break and then you don't have to worry about breaks within your brakes.

Your post mentions kilometers,--so I am guessing you're in Canada or some other rust-prone area. Perfectly normal, unfortunately. (Another reason I chose PCCBs).

Normal. I had it on my 993, 996 and also on the 997.
On my 993 one time I removed the rotors and bead last them. Painted the hat portion.
Normal on steel rotors.

+1 on the ridge being way too high. Those rotors appear to be toast. Tolerance is 26 mm front, 22 mm rear. Any thinner than that and you should replace them.

The rust is normal. Brake rotors are made of mild steel because it is better suited to the task than stainless. The bits that aren't rubbed clean by the brake pads will rust for sure.

I painted the hats on my new rotors so they won't rust. I'll be posting pics soon in my thread here on the subject.
